Food in movies

by Alanna H » Wed Jun 06, 2007 11:31 pm

I went to see 'Waitress' two nights ago and still can't stop thinking about pie. I really want to try some of those flavors she cooked up!
Anyone else have a favorite movie 'food' or food movie?

For me the obvious one is "Chocolate".
Interesting story-line, beautiful photography, chocolate everything and on top of all that...Johnny Depp!
The birthday dinner scene is a great example of how a great meal with friends should be.

Ditto Carla. That's the first and frankly only movie I thought of!
There is also Water For Chocolate. I'm sensing a theme . . .

The "Spanglish" from the movie. Very messy, but quite tasty!

Two classics are "Babette's Feast" and "Big Night."

Big Night is my favorite. The excellent, but short-lived, Nero Wolfe mysteries on A&E were also very food-centric.

Another great restaurant life movie, this one about a Chinese restaurant, is Eat Drink Man Woman, a 1994 flick by Ang Lee, who later directed Brokeback Mountain.

This one looks great, too, but I've never seen it or even heard of it. Anyone?

Dinner Rush (2001)
Louis (Danny Aiello) is an aging bookie and restauranteur who's bemoaning the transformation of Gigino's -- his restaurant in the TriBeCa area of New York City -- from a down-to-earth, mom-and-pop Italian eatery to a pretentious, see-and-be-seen establishment. To make matters worse, Louis's son Udo (Edoardo Ballerini), a talented chef, wants to take over the restaurant … as do a pair of thugs who murdered Louis's partner.

It supposedly has some great scenes that depict action on the line in a restaurant kitchen more accurately than any movie before or since. I've added it to the top of my Netflix queue.

Johnnie To seems to have a food thing going. In multiple of his Hong Kong gangster films, the gangsters pause to whip up a gourmet meal.

Thanks, Madi! I get two Netflix at a time, and right now I've got two French movies out as I prep my terrible language skills for next month's Burgundy tour. :)

But Dinner Rush is next up, and I can't wait!
