Are there any good Cafeterias in Louisville??

by Jim Greenbrier » Fri Jun 01, 2007 1:18 pm

Hello,

After 40 + years, I am returning to my native Louisville. Periodically, I "lust" for a good cafeteria !! Are there any??

As a child, the Blue Boar reigned KING...Fourth Street , across from the Mary Anderson Show, was the Flagship, but all were excellent for a famly.

As I grew older and raised a family, I took them after church to the BB in the St Matthews Mall... Often early and waiting in line , was none other than Colonel Sanders and his wife, Claudia. He d ask my young son what he liked. My boy would say "sicken"...The Colonel would always say, "I get that chicken every Sunday too and it s about the best" !!

There is also the old joke re Cafeterias:

Q. Why do young families eat in cafeterias??
A. They can t afford much more

Q. Why do older couples eat in cafeterias??
A. They ve eaten every place else and they know cafeterias are the BEST!!
Why ?? One can see the food, smell the great variety and one tips at their discretion.!!

Years ago, prompted the food section of the New York Times, I went to the Highland Park Cafteria in Dallas. I had never seen:

a. Closed circuit TV to view the food even from the back of the line
b. A prayer, changed daily, one could use at their table
c. A bakery for take home items
d. A restaurant for those who didn t want to push thier trays.
e. So many Cadillacs parked in one restaurant....ooops, Cafeteria..

Well, I hope some one can tell me. I ll live in Northeast Burbs, but I ll drive a good distnce for a good one!!

If you liked the Blue Boar, you might want to try Cravings in the basement of the the National City tower downtown. It was a Blue Boar property with a different name but the same recipes for most of the food.

Ryans ... horrible

Golden Corral .. barely acceptable

Chinese places... kind of a buffet .. most decent .. the best I have found is at Royal Garden in Fern Creek.

Ann's by the River on Spring St. in Jeffersonville used to be very good. I haven't been in awhile though. Note: I think they close at 8pm and I don't think they are open on Saturdays.

Cravings is a good choice. I got a turkey sub that was as "big as my head" and still spent less than $5.00.

There's a Morrison's near Hurstbourne. I can't remember if it's on a side street or on Hurstbourne. Fair to middling. :)

Cafeterias around town

by Christopher Rieger » Fri Jun 01, 2007 7:42 pm

I still have a place in my heart for the South Side Inn over in New Albany. I don't think the interior of that place has changed since the early 1970s. For cafeteria food, I think it's pretty good and the price is right for the huge portions. They always seem to be generous with the entrees.

Admittedly, I am always a bit unnerved that my wife and are the youngest people there by at least 40 years. It was always my grandparents' favorite, so I stop in once in awhile.

I was going to nominate Cravings as soon as I saw this thread title, looks like a couple of people beat me to it. I went there for lunch today and had some great carved roast beef with au jus, mashed potatoes, carrots, and lemon chess pie.

I enjoy the new Lancasters's Cafe in New Albany. It's pretty basic stuff but the food tastes good and it's reasonable. It's not unlike the Southside but newer and not nearly as frightening to be in.

Anyone know about Hall's on Story Avenue? I'd never heard about it until I happened across it in the phone book.

Halls Cafeteria and the Colonnade

by Jim Greenbrier » Sun Jun 03, 2007 6:57 am

Unfortunately, I can t you "hard informaton", but possibly outdated as I presently live in North Carolina.

Years ago, a Halls was an institution so to speak. A step up from the Blue Boar and excellent. It was located downtown nr Christ Church Cathedral(412 S 2nd) where once they mistakenly claimed President Jefferson Davis , CSA,married President Zachary Taylor s daughter.

About 5 years ago, I had heard the one you speak of as good too. Possibly, it s a part of the same family and carries forth the same quality.

Min s , in the same area you speak of and where Mike Fink roamed was a Louisville time honored tradition. Excellent Cafeteria Style food. Additionally, she and her family where the fore runners of Pat s Steakhouse on Brownsboro and once operated there.

The Colonnade was another 'fixture' in Louisville I wonder if remains.. It was in the Starks Building s Lower Level and renown for it s lunches and Gorgeous Ladies wearing their hats and white gloves too!.

Wish I could have been of more help. Perhaps some one can tell us boh about the Colonade as well as Halls..

Hall's is down on Story right across from the meat packing plant. It is not a buffet but the have a nice sized hot food bar with home cooked food. They have a different selection each day. All of your basic comfort foods and fried chicken, real mashed potatos, green beans, cornbread, etc. They also have a grill (hamburgers, etc), make sandwiches and serve breakfast.

They do a good business, a good portion of it coming from the plant workers across the street.

It is a very blue collar type joint and I like their food, just don't get too dressed up to go there

The only knowledge I have of Hall's is they are mighty nice people and make some mighty fine fried chicken. :D

Brian gave a perfect description of Halls.

The Colonade is closed.

The cafeteria that Jim mentioned next to the church was Miller's Cafeteria, also long since closed.
