Worst beer out there?

by Ron Taglieri » Wed May 30, 2007 9:05 pm

I drank some bad ones in my time, particularly college days. In no particular order, here are some I found pretty bad, but consumed heavily due to young age and cheapness:

1. Old Style
2. Pabst Blue Ribbon
3. Bavarian something (can't remember)
4. Leinenkugel (brand had a mild resurgence, but seemed to be official drink of the homeless)
5. Milwaukee's Best
6. Lone Star
7. Schmidt's (although they had cool cans of outdoor life)

Please do not corrupt this thread with tales of quality beers as it will ruin the spirit of this email. Beers should be judged on poor taste, low prices, dive bars where they were only available, and ability to cause a quality hangover.

On a side note, where is a great dive bar to have some of these beers? Feels kinda Germantown-ish, but always fun to have nostalgic day of drinking with one of these beers.

In the mid 70's I came home from school and bought 6 pacs of Black Lable for 99 cents. I've grown since then............

Leinenkugal is actually decent beer IMO. Not sure if your experience is outdated, but I would definitely not compare it to the others you listed.

My list (not in order) :

Busch
Keystone
Stroh's
Black Label
Red White and Blue
Hudepohl
Little Kings
Falls City
Iron City

Falstaff was the worst, but they don't brew it anymore. My Uncle has a great story from Vietnam where a ship load of Falstaff broke down off the coast and sat in the heat for like a month before they got it moving. They gave the beer away. The soldiers drank it. He said you had to start off with "good" beer and break the bad stuff out after you got good and soused. Even then it was pretty awful. I've tried to imagine just how bad a bottle of Falstaff beer would smell after it sat in the tropical heat for a month. He claims it isn't possible to do.

I'm not a big fan of Canadian beers either. They always taste like they've been sitting in a warm warehouse for too long. Throw Labatt's and Molson on my list.

I refuse to put Milwaulkee's Best on any of my worst beer lists because I drank so much of it in college it got good to me. It's like a visit to Grandma's house, harkening back to a simpler time and place..... <sigh>

If you go this Saturday night you can drink $1 Falls City AND watch one of the best honkey tonk bands in the land.

Johnny Berry and the Outliers play Seidenfaden's the first Saturday of every month. Apparently Honky Tonk fans like cheap, bad beer.

Been there, done that. :p

A lot of favorites are regional ... Genesee ("Green Death" or "Genny") in upstate New York. Iron City in Pittsburgh. Olympia ("Oly") or Rainier ("Green Death" - people are so uncreative) in the Pacific Northwest. Lone Star, yes, but also Pearl in Texas. And right here in the Derby City, Sterling usually edged out Falls City for the bottom of the pack.

In modern times, I'll nominate any "Lite/Light" beer, with dishonorable mention to Coors Light as worst of the worst. I think. I avoid that stuff in general, so it's not like I drink a lot of it.

When I was a little kid, an adult gave me a sip of Billy Beer. Ugh.

At that age I doubt I would have liked anything, but that one sip turned me off of beer until I was actually old enough to drink.

I agree with Coors Light, not sure how they legally even call that stuff beer, tastes more like water.

Alas, I am informed by my Distributor that Fall City may once again get the ax. Seems it is unavailable. Good seller. Here is a really cool site about Falls City http://www.falstaffbrewing.com/falls.htm

I have a soft spot in my heart for the aforementioned Sterling. It was the first beer I ever had. My father offered me one when I was about 13 or 14 years old after doing a better than average job cutting the grass. He used to always keep about 3 cases of the stuff in the garage fridge(Which I pilfered long into my twenties). He use to have one of those picnic salt shakers and would shake some it into the beer(My Grandfather did the same thing). It stuck with me so much, that I when I would come home for a visit, when I was living elsewhere, I would always stop at the nearest liquor store, get one and salt it up. Kinda like stopping at White Castle, I just missed that taste. Still, to this day, I'll stop every once in awhile and have one.

But the all time worst beer out there has to be "Taj Mahal" from India. It tastes like tobacco spit strained through a pair of old gym socks. After thinking about their water soarces there, I can understand why.

Recently, Leinenkugel Summer Shandy. It is like bad watery lemonade and king cobra had a baby.

The Beast from Avery is the only "great " beer I poured down the drain. It's molasses moonshine. It's hard to get down more than 3 swallows much less 12 ounces. Many people stand by it and say it's great.I just couldn't see it.Had no balance, raw power of malt ,caramel, and sugar.

Bud Light is absolutely against everything beer is supposed to be. At least all of the bad lagers you guys mentioned have some body and flavor .Even if it's bad. Bud Light has none. It's badly flavored water.Miller Lite and Coors Light are close seconds to crappy product, massive consumerism brainwashing marketing. Bleh!

Milwaukees Best has a place in my heart also. My grandfather used to drink them with me and my brothers in my early teens when we went fishing or hunting, away from ladies of the house. I will still buy a case of cans when the mood hits me.Brings me back to the memory of innocence.I always had an affinity to falls city , and I have no idea why. It's horrible.

On a side, props to my competition Noch Bar on Kreiger in Germantown.Bravo! They are down the street from my bar Carly Rae's.Amazing hand picked beer selection.I haven't been impressed and refreshed about locally owned bars since my first visit to Rich O's. Now I have another. Half of their taps were blown when I was there but I can understand with specialty beers it always not available when you need it.

My first beer was Falls City. I snuck a drink out of my dads tall boy. Unfortunately he had been using it as an ash tray. Took me a couple more years to try beer again.
