I'd like to see more places closed on this day and a lot of the other holidays. As a child back in the 60's I don't remember this causing too much of a problem. Any thoughts? Here's one local place not open.

I appreciate the sentiment, but I like having dining options every day of the year...especially since outdoor barbeques have never been my thing.

I respect your opinion and have no problem with it. I hope you find a great restaurant in which to dine. I'll either be cooking out or attending a cookout. Let's not forget why this day exists, regardless of political persuasions.

Here's an even nicer way to mark the day: Stay open, but serve military men and women in uniform (or military vets with suitable ID) and let them dine for half price!

Now, there would be a meaningful way to say "Thanks, vets!"

I like that. I knew I could get a better idea than mine. Thanks, Robin.

I guess I'm an old fashioned guy and relish the days of going down the US highways with dad at the wheel looking for a place to stay before the fuel stations closed for the evening. Stuckey's, here we come. Alas, those days are gone forever. Just call me stuck in the 60's. Damn, I'm getting old.

Of course, Memorial Day is to honor those who died in service to the country. If you serve anyone like that, please let me know.

Veteran's Day is the more general holiday for all the troops.

As somebody who would like to see more stores open on Christmas Day, I can't go along with this.

Seriously, as with many things in a free country, I respect the decisions of any business about whether they decide to open or not on holidays, and it doesn't influence a business' likability factor with me either way. And with this holiday, perhaps some do quite a bit to celebrate it, but I know of few who do anything besides perhaps a cookout.

Oh, and yeah, support the troops! (the disastrous policies are a different matter)

P.S. I do like the idea of serving servicepeople at a discount.

While I like to dine out on my nights off, I must voice the opinion that even people who have chosen the service industry as a career (like myself) deserve time off in observance of holidays.

I'm almost 50 now and I served the industry for half my life. I'm glad to have a proponent aboard. Thanks for your opinion. Also, thanks for all opinions, whether or not I agree. Enjoy this 3 day holiday weekend. Remember/discover why it is a holiday.

See ya next week.

Maybe we could have a tractor trailer load of White Castles delivered to our boys in the middle east. Burger King and KFC could chip in as well.

My only comment is that if a place is going ot be closed on the Holiday weekend, please post a sign on the front of your business. I had that problem with a local eatery today. Drove out there, walk up to the door, all the lights are out and the door is locked.

I've always struggled to understand how commerce can be an affront to a class of people, an institution or an idea.

How on earth do fallen soldiers benefit from the closure of businesses?

Certainly, not dining out can arbitrarily be viewed as respectful to those who have served in the military. Likewise, the act of dining out can also be viewed as expressive of the same sentiment.

It would seem that we're confusing symbolism and sentiment. Robin's suggestion is a good one: instead of arbitrarily closing your business to everyone, why not extend special benefits to those who have served the country, thereby expressing the desired sentiment?
