Brew at the Zoo

by Todd Antz » Fri Aug 28, 2009 10:01 am

I realized this morning that there has been no conversation this year about Brew at the Zoo. I went out to their website to see who is participating and they have the 5 local breweries listed, as well as a few other craft breweries. The participating restaurant list looks larger than prior years as well.

It completely slipped my mind and I've scheduled too much tomorrow to make it out there. Is anyone else on the forum heading out to the event?

It looks like tickets are still available, unless they have not updated the website: http://www.louisvillezoo.org/events/brew.htm

We would have been happy to publicize it on the forum and on the LouisvilleHotBytes pages as a PSA, but no one from th eorganization ever contacted me. Odd, and a bit stupid ...

I find it odd they list

BBC on Main St., Louisville, KY
Bluegrass Brewing Co., Louisville, KY
Sheltowee Brewing Co., Louisville, KY

as three different breweries.

BBC on Main St and Sheltowee are all brewed at the same location (Clay and Main), with the Sheltowee being the beer brewed exclusively for Liquor Barn. The Bluegrass Brewing Company is the brewpub on Shelbyville Road, which is a separate entity. It is always a confusing issue to sort out.

Isn't it all the same beer?

While they share the same names for their core beers, and I believe the same recipes for the core beers, there are two different sets of brewers for each side of BBC, and as such they put their own little spin on it.

The Clay and Main brewery is primarily a production brewery. Any of the six pack bottles that you see around town come from there. This is the same situation for the Sheltowee line. They also keg beer and sell it to numerous bars around the area and in several states via their distributors.

The Shelbyville Road brewpub supplies beer for themselves, as well as their satellite bars around town. They also bottle in 750ml bottles, with a more limited distribution. They have their core beers that they brew, but the also will brew more unique beers as well.

As I said earlier, it is a pretty confusing situation, but there are separate owners and separate brewers for each side. We had both represented at our Fest of Ales this year and both brought a completely different set of beers to sample.

So I can get different beers downtown then at the Brewpub? Dammit! I have never made it to the downtown location because I thought they were one in the same.

Is the Sheltowee just a private label of an existing BBC beer or something totally different?

We're going to the zoo tomorrow. Might head to New Albany for that bar/brew event.

THERE'S SO MUCH GOING ON!!

Sorry. There's been a lot going on lately, hasn't there?

As Dave attests, NABC will be at Brew at the Zoo with beer only (it's food, folks): http://potablecurmudgeon.blogspot.com/2 ... -this.html

We'll be having a special day in downtown NA for the beer walk: http://potablecurmudgeon.blogspot.com/2 ... -bank.html

And Josh will have the Bank Street kitchen open for the usual fine fare: http://potablecurmudgeon.blogspot.com/2 ... ps-of.html

There. I'm all informationed-out.

I think 27 breweries are represented. 23 wineries. Lots of local and regional food as well. I know they've sold more tix than last year so far...

should be a great event barring a weather catastrophy.
