KY State Fair Food

by Bryan R » Fri Aug 21, 2009 2:46 pm

A bunch of friends will be rockin' out old school at the Journey concert tonight. We are planning to eat at the fair before the concert. Any suggestions? What is the best food out at the fair?

In general, the Kentucky agricultural producers tent, over on the south side of Broadbent Arena. Booths featuring goodies prepared by Kentucky Beef, Lamb, Poultry, Fish, Dairy and other producers. The pork chop sandwich is always a winner, but I'm with Justin, the lamb barbecue is hard to beat ... assuming you like fresh Kentucky lamb, as I certainly do.

We also ate at the tent outside the animal area..KY products..it was very very good. Much better than other fair fare.

There has usually been a Ky Ag Products food court in the South Wing, as well....I recommend the Pork Chop Sandwich, drizzled with BBQ sauce and wash it down with a "Lemon Shake-Up"....

We'll be at the show tonight, as well. I'm anxious to see Arnel Pineda perform live. The hubby and I were watching the Download Festival in Donnington, on HDNet, and he sounded great. Hopefully Journey will be as good as Def Leppard were in '07.

Pork Chop Sammich a must.

Let me know how that goes. My wife is half-Filipina, and I was very excited to share the story of Journey finding Mr. Pineda awhile back. It's a great story - he was the lead singer in a Journey cover band in the Phillipines, Manila I think. Journey caught him on YouTube, and then paid for him to come to the US and audition - he got the job on the spot. He went from VERY poor to quite rich overnight, literally.

I second Pork Butt !!!! Got to have one every year and might start running a special at the cafe.
By the way. You know you are at the fair when the pickup in front of you has a bumper sticker that reads:
I HAVE A DREAM... next to the Confederate Flag... Oh yeah, Fair TIme! Aint nothing like it.

Ehrlers is the only correct answer here. While the rest of the foods mentioned are good, this is the best.

I was out at Linnig's tonight with some family from out of town, so I'm good on that. When I get to the fair at some point in the next week or so I'm going to be hitting the Ehrlers booth, the bbq lamb, fudge, more ehrlers, probably a pork product sandwich of some sort, maybe some brisket if they've got that again.

Good times.

Well...We went to the fair early before the Journey/Heart Rock Show(It was Awesome) and here's a rundown of the gluttony parade this year.
Started with a grilled country ham sammich from the KY Producers tent as a starter then moved straight over and got a brisket sammich as well.
Colleen got her Pineapple Whip and corn dog/Lemon Shake up fix while I moved on to a big grilled chicken sandwich(kinda dry) and then we found a booth at the very far end of the South Wing that has some tasty gumbo and Crab Rolls (think tube shaped crab cakes)...possibly the best thing I ate this year.
Thought about having Mike Linnig's but went for a Pork Butt on Stick instead...Adding in several beers and cocktails, I hate to think what my caloric intake was...This WAS over the course of seven hours however, so I don't think I'm that big of a "Mr. Creosote"

Last year I ate at the Mike Lenning's sweat tent and found the food way overpriced. This year I'll be sticking with the old standby, the Pork Chop sandwich.

Question: Is there any good beer available at the fair? Or at least a place that'll sell me a bourbon on the rocks?

Arnel Pineda is AMAZING. He couldn't sound any more like Steve Perry, but he is not a Perry clone, if that makes any sense. He definitely put himself into the performance. They were so, so good. I wish Journey had cut a couple of songs out that nobody knew. I always hate when a concert has a lull in the middle, which they did, for about 4 songs. From the first note that came out of his mouth, I knew it would be a great show. I even busted my husband, who teases me about Journey's "cheese" factor, and who griped about not wanting to go, singing along.

Heart were so damn good. I really, seriously want to be Ann Wilson when I grow up. That voice...how is it possible to sound BETTER Live than on CD? The bluegrass version of Led Zeppelin's "Going to California" made my jaw drop. They were ballsy enough to cover Led Zeppelin and PULLED IT OFF!

Anyway....just my humble opinion...back to food!
