Damon,
You may want to check out the search feature at the top of the forum. There are threads on many of these favs that you'll find with a quick search.

On the Gyro, here is my fav. They have a website now with a menu and a pic of their gyro. The bread is not a typical pita and it sets it apart from the rest I believe. Great turkish coffee also. This place has been there 10yrs and its a hidden gem. They are from Bosnia and very nice folks. It's a combination of a small ethnic grocerery and small restaurant, only about 5 tables or so.

Bosna-Mak,google it for directions.Near Hikes lane, off Bardstown ,around the corner from Derby city antique mall. I think the next runners up would be either Sharooms or Zaytun(both in the same family).

So, what is the bread like at Bosna-Mak? Personally I love an authentic ( no pocket) pita, but I'm open to something new...

I looked all over to find a pic of that type of bread. The link above shows a lady holding a tray of bread thats quite similar to the gyros bread found at bosna-mak. I have noticed this type of "pita" at other croat/serb/bosna type joints. One other place here in the ville uses almost identical bread on their gyros. I cant remember the name but its a unique little spot by the drive in around the Iroquois neighborhood. I would describe the bread as having a flavor similar to an english muffin, but with a very light and fluffy mouth feel. If you go the Bosna-Mak dont forget to go into their bakery store right next door, the Jasmine Bakery.

Deb,
Not sure how to describe it other than more of a fresh baked bread pocket, not as dense as a pita. There is a pic on the website that I put a link to in my previous post. I love it though.

It would be great if Robin would find the time to review/check out the Bosna-Mak.

I've suggested it to Robin at least 3 times over the last 3-4 years. Maybe he doesn't like Bosnian foods?

I do! I love Bosnian food! I haven't been to Bosnia, but I've traveled to its neighbors Slovenia and Croatia in the former Yugoslavia, and the eats there are very good. I've pretty much supported all the Bosnian restaurants in town - unfortunately, most of 'em haven't seemed to last. Nermana's, zap, Papillon, zap, Fat Bread, zap ... Okay, I'll move Bosna-Mak up my list. Harrumph ... so many eateries, so little time.

Awesome!!! good to know the squeaky wheel theory still works.
As a side question...anyone know how long Bosna-Mak has been around? I found it not long after we moved here,so I know its been going at least five to six years.

Suprisingly, they've been at that location for quite some time. The owner is very nice. I asked him how long they had been there and he said almost 10yrs and that was 2-3 yrs ago. I think he may have had a different location prior to that one. So Robin, this is one that has been around and seems to have good staying power. Oh again, try some of their turkish coffee also, it's good.

Yes, that's the Nermana's that I mentioned above. Very nice family. It was sad to see it go, but I guess Frankfort Avenue just wasn't ready for a Bosnian eatery. I expect the rent on that place may be high, also. It has burned through several more short-lived food-and-drink spots since then.

annemarie m wrote:speaking of bosnian food. we used to go this place once a week, i think it was on frankfort ave. the place was called ermina's (if i remember correctly) it was in a small house run by a husband and wife who did the cooking and the servers were her son and daughter. i really enjoyed the food there. we went there for years. every time we went we were the only patrons though, sadly it closed. i sure miss that place. anyone else ever been there?
