Perfetto Pizzeria: Almost perfect NYC pie

by Robin Garr » Fri Jun 19, 2009 4:44 pm

The new Perfetto Pizzeria in Plainview makes a pretty good emulation of a NYC-style pie. The sausage slice pictured ($3.14) boasts a thin, hand-tossed crust, chunks of fennel-scented sausage, a light, tangy tomato sauce and plenty of creamy cheese.

They could use a hotter oven for a crisper crust, but it comes pretty close to any of the hundreds of NYC street-corner "Original Ray's."

Service is excellent, by the way, which bodes well considering that wacky service appeared to be the primary culprit in killing the short-lived Slice of NY at this location ...

Am I understanding that Perfetto Pizzeria is not owned or operated by the same folks who ran Slice of NY? If so I'll try it next week.

Ronnie, I don't have any inside info, but the family with the teen-age kids who acted like they were being forced to work behind the counter even though they hated it was nowhere in evidence. The guy who appeared to be the owner or manager was very cordial, friendly and helpful, and service in general was perfect, quick and courteous.

Al least one of the new owners must be from the Perfetto family. There is a Certificate of Immigration on the wall with the old pictures, showing somebody named Perfetto to have immigrated through Ellis Island, I think.

The owners can't do enough for you. Definitely NOT the Slice of NY crowd.

Knew you'd like it, Robin...

We've been there 5 times in the past 2 weeks.

I agree about the crust.......and when you order 'by the slice', they throw it back in the over to reheat, and the crust comes out crisp.

I plan on ordering mine 'well' next time, to perhaps help out on the crust a little. Still, I absolutel LOVE this pizza, think it delivers that NY Taste as good as anyone in town other than Luigi's, which is never open when I'm available...

AHA! That actually IS the NYC method, Adrian, as you may know. Normally I think Perfetto does this, bu tas it happens, a whole cheese pie and a whole sausage pie had just come out of the oven when we arrived, so ours did not get the back-in-the-oven treatment.

Would someone fill me in on the entire Slice of NY spiel?

I'll give you a short story. They had pretty good pizza but terrible service and a questionable attitude. Needless to say they didn't last long.

Adding to what Mark said, it appeared to be a case of parents drafting their teen-age boys to work behind the counters, and the teens responding to this unwanted task by a passive-aggressive attitude toward both the parents and the customers.

I've eaten there several times. I don't know if I'd give it the high praise Robin does but it's a pretty darn good pie. They use good cheese (of course they do considering they're from Wisconsin) and have a pretty good crust. I will totally agree with the level of service. I've met both the husband and wife and they are friendly, gracious and attentive. I only wish they'd get the Italian Ices back.

Maybe I spoke too much in code. Original Ray's is classic NYC street food, but it doesn't exactly equate to "Hall of Fame pizza," Neal. What I'm trying to say is that Perfetto does a pretty good job of emulating the NYC street-corner style, for better or worse, but the most significant flaw is insufficient oven heat to get the crust right.

I like the place and, as others have said, think the service dramatically outpaces its predecessor. But I'd say I gave them "praise," not "high praise."

Just sayin' ...
