Good anchovies, where?

by Colin H » Mon Jun 01, 2009 6:17 pm

Does anyone have any idea where I can find some good anchovies? Ortiz brand would be preferable, but I can deal with any spanish fishies in a jar. Whole Foods, Lotsa Pasta, and Doll's are a negative.

Have you tried Creation Gardens? They sell to the public.

Didn't think about them, but I'll give them a call tomorrow.

I got my last jar at the Market next to where Melillo's was- is it called the Bodega? The Phoenix Hill Farmers Market is in front of it Tues 3-7.

The white anchovies in olive oil from Creation Garden are by far the best in town. you can always pickle your own at home with a simple pickling recipe. Also my former co-worker from a past restaurant brought a tin back from Norway that was the best I've ever tasted. no "fish food" after taste like the P-Johns style. You may be able to order them online

Are you sure? I've seen jarred anchovies there before.

First place I looked, actually (mostly since it's 4 blocks from my house), and the only actual whole anchovies they had were in a giant tin that said "best comsumed by (last year)"

Just wait until Gayle reads that....youre in for it.
The tall one wants white toast, dry, with nothin' on it.
And the short one wants four whole fried chickens, and a Coke.

Well, I can't fight you on this one because the Norwegian anchovy, though similar in taste, isn't the same species as the Mediterranean anchovy. However, I firmly believe that the best of either are salt packed.

I've heard that, and I've also heard that high quality oil-packed ones are just as good, but honestly, I'm just too lazy and don't like them enough to want to have to debone and filet them.

I just had another thought. I believe I've seen them at Burger's Market.

I have purchased Ortiz anchovies from Lotsa Pasta and white anchovies in a plastic pouch from Whole Foods.

When did you get either of those? The only actual anchovies I saw at Lotsa Pasta were in a rather large tin and were a bit old. I also only saw a few small tins at whole foods....

I was in Lotsa Pasta a few days ago and they had, what appeared to be, white anchovies in their deli case (right side). $25/Lb.
