Battle: Pizza

by Steve P » Sun May 31, 2009 1:52 am

Given that the idea of a Veggie-throw down seems to have either gone underground or hasn't generated sustainable interest, how about a Pizza throw down ? Since joining the forum I can't think of anything (other than maybe burgers) that has generated more opinions than pizza. It seems like everyone on the forum has an opinion about who has the best pizza in town (and who DOESN'T like pizza in one form or other)

Given that most pizza places deliver this seems like a made to order throw down dish. The restaurants could cook the pizza in the own establishments and deliver them to a central location. Judging might be accomplished by an 8 member judging panel (given that most pizzas are cut into 8 slices). Robin could even award the winner the coveted "Louisville Hotbytes" pizza of the year award :D

If not pizza...how about Burgers ?

Whatta ya think ?

Great idea Steve. Perhaps the panel of judges could be made up of regional afficionados...the NY contingent,a representative from the west coast,Chicago style(I'd be well suited for this),etc....a traditionalist judge would be great as well. I think this would provide a well rounded and balanced view of the pizza arts.

How about a veggie pizza competition? Every time I have tried a vegetable only pizza, it usually does not turn out well at all. I'd love to see a competition of something most people love (pizza) with the slant of veggie only.

My two cents, veggie pizza is always doomed. The vegetables release to much water during the cooking. Although, I suppose if someone really did pull off a top quality veggie pie it would really showcase their pizza making skills.

Todd,

Every pizza slinger I've ever known considered themselves an artist of sorts (and in many cases I wouldn't dispute this one bit). To tie their creative hands by limiting the ingredients would be like giving a painter a palette of three colors and asking them to paint you a masterpiece. Were something like this "battle" ever to come to fruition, my suggestion would be to let the pepperoni fall where it may.

I like John's thoughts on judging such a throw down...right after the pizza judging we could have a cage match between the New York judges and the Chicago judges. The loser has to eat the Californians pizza.

The veggies release water, and the meat releases grease. That's a wash. Perhaps it would make sense to limit the number of veggie toppings.

I'm not sure I would go so far as to say its a wash, after all pork grease tastes so much better than bell pepper/mushroom leachate.

Fear not -- I'm with you on that. Pork fat rocks this and all other conceivable worlds. Alas, my wife, a vegetarian, doesn't agree with either of us. That's where the topic of "compromise" comes to rest.

2 Divisions: Meat and Vegetarian/Vegan

Separate judges for each division. Cook it anywhere and bring it to the venue.

Wick's in Middletown makes a mean Veggie Delight and it isn't even close to being watery.

Could we also have a cheese pizza division? Cheese pizza from different restaurants never tastes the same.
