Greek restaurants?

by Adam Smith » Wed May 13, 2009 9:25 am

Seems like I've had all types of cuisine here in Louisville, even some Greek items at certain places, but I don't think I've ever been to a Greek restaurant. I'd really like to get some good spanakopita and roasted lamb/goat. Any ideas?

The Grape Leaf on Frankfort Ave. is really good.

I second the Grape Leaf. Great food and I thought you got a ton of food for the price!

Adam,

There's also an annual Greek Festival and it's coming up. June 12-14th on The Belvedere downtown. My father-in-law is Greek (from Cyprus) and they usually work in one of the booths.

Here's the menu from the website. They always have spanakopita. http://louisvillegreekfest.com/menu.html

Thanks, I've been meaning to make it out to this for the past couple years. I'm definitely penciling that into my schedule.

WARNING ABOUT GREEK FESTIVAL: Last year we got there for dinner around 6:30 or so, and they already were out of over half the main dishes! If you want to go, go early!

Thanks for the warning, Andrew! We're planning on heading to this fest this year, and would be soooooo disappointed if we missed the good food! We haven't been to this fest, but we usually go to the 'International' festival at the Greek Orthodox church on Hike's Lane.

Greek or Middle Eastern? Everybody has gyros, but authentic Greek restaurants are thin on the ground here in Louisville. Sadly, they've never really thrived here, and the few entries have been short-lived.

You hit the nail on the head, Robin. I know I can get greek items at many Middle Eastern restaurants but I was looking for an entire Greek meal. I wonder if there's any in Cincinnati, I'll likely be up there a couple times this summer for baseball games.

On the out of town idea, if you're ever in St. Louis for a baseball game or otherwise, check out Momo's in the University City neighborhood. Great Greek tapas and wine. It's one of my favorites there.

If you are willing to drive to Cincy, trot to Madison, IN for Greek Native Nick @ Bistro 1. Spanikopita, saganaki, and new pastry chef. For the authentic, full Greek focus, I definitely recommend Bistro 1. Please tell him hi from Reagan.

I had forgotten all about the Greek Festival until friends called yesterday to invite us to join them. (otherwise, we would've gone there Sat. instead of the Grape Leaf! But I can't have too much Middle Eastern food!) We had been planning on going to the picnic at Locust Grove, but spending time with our friends and checking out the Greek Festival sounded better.

The gyros looked tempting, but we decided to start by sharing one of the complete meals, thinking we would have an gyros later. The meal was huge! We had the Chicken Riganato, which came with green beans, rice, a choice of casserole (we chose mousaka), and a Greek salad. We got a Spanakopita as well. Everything was wonderful. The chicken was moist and flavorful, the green beans were stewed with onions and tomatoes, and I loved them. The moussaka was rich and very meaty, with potatoes and eggplant throughout. I'm sure that dish would've been better if we'd gotten a piece from a fresher pan, but it was still very good. (And THIS dish had the subtle cinnamon flavor I prefer!) The dressing on the salad was very good, with noticeable oregano flavor. The spanokopita was crisp and full of spinach and feta. I wasn't sure it would still be so crisp at this type of setting, but it was. After all this food, even between the 2 of us, we felt extremely well-fed, and didn't have room for the gyros. Our friend had one, and said it was very good. I would definitely recommend going next year!

I went to the GreekFest Saturday, really disappointed. Got a gyro that was decent. NO live music for the hour we were there. The food line was like a 10-15 minute wait so I didn't even bother. Sampled some wine from River Bend, not at all impressed. Maybe I was expecting too much but I left feeling unsatisfied.

I hit the Greek Fest late Saturday. I had the same 10-15 minute wait for food, tried the pastitsio, which was nice and creamy, and the dolmathes, which had a nice taste. The little butter cookies didn't do much for me, but the dark walnut cake soaked with honey was fantastic.

I don't know what time you were there, but there was live music and greek dancing going on the entire time I was there, including the dancers pulling the crowd in to join the group.
