Chopped liver anyone?

by Phil Gissen » Sun Apr 12, 2009 1:39 pm

Where can I get some good chopped liver and latkes in town? Does anyone have any ideas?

Time to start cooking Phil. I haven't found any in this town that wasn't homemade. Luckily for me a friend is giving me some this week.

I don't know if Gavi's downtown (222 S. 7th St.) will have latkes this week. They had some wonderful matzo ball soup last week; best I've ever had! You could call them and ask about the latkes. 583-8183

I have not found either, and regardless I like my own best!

I'm afraid to eat chopped liver here, as I think it would be ordered infrequently at best, and I don't trust chopped liver more than a day or so old. I have had latke's here (sorry - potato pancakes in Louisville speak), but mostly in forms unrecognizable to frequenters of deli's in Chicago, Cleveland, or NYC.

Stevens and Stevens on Bardstown Road has chopped liver on one of its sandwiches. They generally do things well. From good latkes in Louisville I don't know. How did the brisket turn out?

Phil:
Our good Jewish delis closed years ago. Very sad. The best and closest is Shapiro's in Indianapolis. Indy's only a couple of hours away , you might enjoy the adventure! Sorry I forgot all about calling you guys about Kenneland on Saturday. Couldn't go, Gordy signed me up to walk for Multiple Sclerosis, hope you all had fun!!!! Carolyne

Thanks for all your help. We finally bought some chopped liver at Stevens and Stevens. We gave up on the Latkes. Take care everyone.

Just a bit farther than Indy is Nashville, where you'll find the Noshville Deli . . . two locations, one "down & dirty" in medical center area and one newer (don't know about cleaner) near Vandy . . . all the standards! (what is it about deli's, they always seem dirty to me - and Noshville and Corky & Lenny's in Cleveland seem to be closed periodically by boards of health)

My husband and I are currently involved in our Monday night routine. We usually order carry-out from somewhere in the Highlands or nearby. The process is involved. And way too much time is spent looking at online menus until we find something we both want.

A few minutes ago, we were checking out Ramsi's menu and I noticed that they have potatoe latkes. Both as a side item and as an accompaniment to the beef brisket entree.

Fyi....Red Pepper on lower Brownsboro won out this evening.

The Wild Eggs at Westport Village has latkes. I like pretty much everything on the menu better; they're greasy. Still, it's closer than Queens.

Not sure if they still offer them, but I've had very good latkes at Cafe Beignet (aka The Fish House 5 days a week) on Grinstead. They even served them with sour cream AND apple sauce. And they offered us a friendly "shalom" when they brought them to the table. I'd say they were the best I've had in the city that weren't homemade.
