Rethinking plans for Limestone on graduation night- help!

by Casandra C » Fri Apr 03, 2009 4:08 pm

I've always wanted to try Limestone's "Feed Me Chef"--- especially after 9pm when the gratis wine kicks in. I'd never been there (before today). We have a reservation for a party of 6, and I hoped that the chef would be able to modify "feed me" to suit one pescetarian amongst the omnivores.

I had lunch there today, which was really a fabulous deal. $11.95 for the soup/salad/dessert + an entree, half price wine or draft beer... what a good buy! We enjoyed the salads a lot, the soup was good (if a little salty) and our entrees were also good (not great- seafood crepes and a salmon- but both very salty.) I would likely go for lunch again and try to order something with less sodium. The bread pudding was WONDERFUL, and our server was excellent.

My query is this- although I felt like they put on a nice lunch for a very reasonable price, I'm not sure if I quite got the feeling it was what we'd want to do for a really important celebration. The location is quite far from our house and since I'm sure we'll be enjoying some libations, it would involve a round-trip taxi ride from the Highlands ($$$.)

Did we just have an unluckily salty lunch that was an anomaly, or is this the usual? Should I stick with my current plans or consider a new location and try the FMC on another occasion if we get a chance before we move? TIA!

Good luck with whatever decision you end up making.
I just wanted to let you know, in general, not to underestimate the healing powers of City-Scoot as a way to avoid round-trip cab fare.

I did the "Feed Me Chef" on New Year's Eve, a VERY busy night there, and it was wonderful. Like you, we went after 9 o'clock. We had a wonderful meal.

Ooh, why didn't I think of that! I tried to use them once before but it was going to be nearly an hour wait so we made other arrangements. Good idea! Now I just have to figure out what vehicle we can get 7 people in once we include the driver... Somehow I don't think they will all fit in my hatchback :)

I have probably averaged 18 meals per year at Limestone, ever since they opened. I have never noticed anything to be overly salted and I am pretty sensitive to salt. I have done the "feed me chef" four times (all but once after nine) and have thoroughly enjoyed the experience each time.

That said, if you want to try something closer to the Highlands, I'm sure that Seviche would be a good choice for a pescetarian. :)

I'll bet I've had the salmon for lunch 25 times, and have never noticed unusual salt (and I rarely cook much with salt, so I feel like I'm sensitive to it). Same for the soups, which I have always counted among the best in town.

It sounds like the Feed Me Chef has been a big hit, in general. Maybe we should stick with it...

Gayle, I think Seviche is a fabulous idea... we go there often enough that I'd like to try someplace new or at least less familiar, though. They do treat pescetarians right, I must say! :)

I am glad no one else has had the over-salting problem, but I swear I'm not crazy (at least in regards to this issue)- I was dining with my mom and she commented on the saltiness before I ever said anything, although I was thinking it. Maybe just an oddity?

I'm going to consider a few other options (Lilly's, which I love, and Rivue which I haven't been to since it was the Flagship are in the running) but it seems that the FMC might be a good choice after all.

Personally, of the above mentioned places, I think I'd stick with Limestone.

I used to LOVE lilly's. The last two times we went (last summer and then October) were not memorable.

Cassie is an old friend and a former student of mine. We have been emailing about where she should go for her graduation from med school dinner. Here is the nutshell of what I've been saying, please pipe up if you think I've led her astray.

Although I've eaten many a times at Limestone without noticing saltiness, I did point out that it is my understanding that Chef Mike is no longer active on a day-to-day basis and that a new chef may have been hired that uses a heavier hand with salt than Chef Mike or Chef Jim. I can't think of anything worse than extra salt at a most special dinner. (That said I will be going there for lunch this Friday.) I also pointed out that the seafood selection is limited and she might want to call them to see if the Feed Me Chef option could accommodate her pescatarian needs.

I told her that Volare was my fav, but that its seafood selection is limited. I then suggested Asiatique or Z's Oyster Bar and Steakhouse for numerous seafood choices.

Then remembering the she had considered Rivue since it was close to the graduation site, I suggested Z's Fusion which has a excellent choice of seafood items and is much friendlier to the wallet than Z's Oyster Bar & SH. I also pointed out that our own Stephen D makes killer cocktails there.

If you feel that I have misled Cassie, please point out my errors as it is very important to me that she have a most special evening.

Sounds like good advice to me, Gayle. Based on location and Stephen perhaps being there to welcome them, Z's Fusion might be the best of several good ways to go!

Absolutely loved Z's Fusion the other night. I would think it would be a grand setting for a special meal.

Well, I think you made great suggestions, including Z's Fusion, BUT I wouldn't be so quick to talk her out of Rivue.

I really can't recall its appeal for pescatarians, but in general my wife and I fell in love with Rivue. I have absolutely nothing but praise for that establishment, from the food, service, and general wow-factor upon entering. The prices are also very reasonable, and it has a feel unlike anything else in the city. It would also be a very good place for a group due to the seating options.

Personally, I still think the "Feed Me " option at Limestone would be a stellar choice for a special night out. Thanks for reminding me about it- I think that'll have to be at the top of our list for the dinner to celebrate my new job ( keeping my fingers crossed on the offer that is forthcoming).
