LouLou for two

Theres not a whole lot I can add to the thousands of posts here on the forum raving about how good Cafe Lou Lou is, so Ill take a slightly different approach. While we thought the pizza was great(thin crust golden brown on the bottom,lightly sauced with a very tasty marinara,good italian sausage and just the right amount of cheese) and the drinks were well crafted(good bloodys,not too spicy but still having a good bite,no celery but big fat green olives) what we were most impressed with was the service. Our time constraints last Thursday dictated a late lunch for us,three o'clock. We had a meeting at five nearby,so a leisurely lunch seemed perfect. When we arrived we sat at the bar,spare a few other diners we had the place to ourselves. The tall guy(looks like he should be on the track team) got us settled at the bar and took our drink orders and brought out waters for us right away. Seems like a small thing but Anne always likes to have a glass of water before she orders,and when eating at a bar we often end up having to ask for one. We explained we'd be sitting for awhile and we would put in an order in a bit. No problems the staff didnt make us feel rushed at all. We often end up eating between regular service times,its just how our schedule works. We have really come to enjoy this time in a restaurant as you get more time to talk with the servers/bar staff. I guess we were at a shift change/the lunch staff started filling in the same area of the bar eating talking and what not. We cracked a couple of jokes at Marshas expense and the staff made us feel right at home. Anne and Laura(bar tender)ended up talking about Little House on the Prairie, I remember thinking how many bars can you go into and talk "Little House". The other gal at the bar was relaying baby news that was coming live via cell phone from the expectant mother to everybody. Ended up being a great way to spend a couple of hours,good drinks,great food, and even better people. I guess my point here is to suggest that you should try going to one your favorite places during between the rushes and take the time to get to know the folks that make it happen.

Great post John. Thanks for adding your two cents. I can't believe we haven't been to "LouLou" yet but it is fo-sho on our "must do list".

I love Lou Lou's for the same reason. Service is always great. It's not just that the service is 'what it should be", it's that the staff always makes you feel so at home. No pasted on smiles or phony cordiality, just a genuine desire for their guests to enjoy themselves.

As a result of a family health emergency I spent most of the last three days "on the road". When I arrived home yesterday Becky and I agreed that cooking dinner was something neither one of us felt like doing. So recalling John's recent review of Cafe Lou-Lou we piled into the old VW micro-bus and headed into St. Matthews in search of "The Old Sears Building"...Which, if we understand the natives correctly, radiates a series of directional beams which will point to the location you are seeking.

I'm afraid I can't add too much to John's (and other reviews) that hasn't already been said. The food was great and we loved the atmosphere. Having forgotten my glasses, I went the simple route of just ordering the "Combination Pizza" (I could read the "big print" but my arms weren't long enough to be able to decipher exactly what toppings would be included). No matter because this pizza would be great regardless of the toppings. This is definitely one of the best pies in L'ville. Becky had some pasta-chickeny dish (again, I couldn't read the menu) which I shared a bite or two of...Whatever it was it was great. I tried to trade my pizza for it but she wasn't having any part of that.

After dinner we let the Sear's directional beams show us the way to Equus/Jacks for a little after dinner "nip". Walking into Jack's it was immediately apparent why some of you go flippers over the places. What a cool bar. Kind of an old school "Rat Packish" feel to it without the 30 years of smoke. Oh and this bourbon thing Kentucky has going...I think they may be onto something there. Hope they don't give up on it.

Leaving Jack's we noticed another directional beam leading to Havanna Rumba, sooooooo we hoped on THAT bad boy and went in to enjoy a couple of beers and an appetizer sampler. Again, my arms weren't long enough to see exactly what we were ordering but it was for the most part pretty tasty stuff...I'd go back for more some time.

Anyway...Once you get the hang of it, this "Old Sears Building" thing really works. Can't wait to see where it leads next.

Now THAT I am looking forward to...particularly if John Hagen will be there with my Bhut Jolokia plant. Yep, now that we know about the magic of the "Old Sears Building" I can't wait to see what adventures await us...Best I can tell the only thing the place is missing is a hookah smoking caterpillar.

I was talking to Anne about those at the Flabby's offline, and I'd love to get my hands on one as well. John, will you let us know when we can buy a plant (or at least some peppers)?
