Warren Oates and Jack Fry,s

by Ellen P » Tue Mar 24, 2009 8:34 pm

I would like to see a historical marker at Jack Fry,s recognizing that Warren lived in the neighborhood and hung out there alot. My mother's family lived on Morton for more than 50 years. Warren lived on Edward behind what was then Atherton.
They went to Male High School together, UL, helped him get married a couple of times, and hung out at Jack Fry's when there was really a Jack Fry to hang out with. He went on to Hollywood and died about 25 years ago.
Occassionally UL will show a documentary on his life. KET showed part of one a few months ago.
I think it would fit in keeping Louisville wierd.
Some of his Hollywood friends are still alive - Ned Beatty, Peter Fonda. Maybe someone has contacts.
A festival at Baxter Theater? (Back then we went to the Airway Follies - but not when it was the follies:-) At least my grandmother and I didn't go in then.
Nice showcase for Jack Fry's and the other restaurants in the area.
NABC and BBC did a film fest of sorts last year, outside by Main Street.
Thanks again if anyone is inspired to run with this.

Back in the day, i lived above jack frys and right next to jack in a cold water flat kind of apt. The poor guy would come down and wash dishes in the restuarant he no longer owned. Lots of drugs and such back then, but i always will remember jack in his sleevless t-shirt washing dishes in the kitchen....the stories he could have told. Bill

Ned Beaty's nephew was my asst mgr at Tumbelweed in the early 80's. His mom was Ned's sister. He played in a local band called Puddin Foot. Great bassists who jammed with the Allman Bros in Macon.

Knew a guy in high school who appeared as an extra in the movie (during the basic training indoctrination scenes at Ft Knox...I still see him in the background whenever I watch it) ....

From Jack Fry's web site
JACK FRY'S was established in 1933 by Jack Fry and his wife, Flossie. Fry was known as rambling, gambling kind of guy who loved amateur boxing and the ponies. As a result Jack Fry's became a sportsman’s hangout, as evidenced by the numerous historic photographs that fill the walls of the current Jack Fry's. He was also known to conduct his bookmaking and bootlegging affairs discreetly from "the back room". He was a much-loved character who often gave a free meal to a needy friend. Jack closed his business in 1972. After ten years of renting this space as "Por Que No", a Mexican restaurant, it was re-established as Jack Fry's. Susan Seiller bought the restaurant in January 1987, the same year that saw the death of Jack Fry.

I'm sure management would know, but that surprises me. I don't recall Por Que No as being around anything like 10 years, and I would have said that Jack Fry's opened (in its present form) earlier than 1982 (1972+10).

1982 is right. I used to get of the tarc bus there and have tea after school. There was a waitress I really liked hanging out with.

My dad was an irrepressable gamblin' man....I distinctly remember the first two games I ever learned my dad taught me how to play; liar's poker and gin rummy. Right after that I learned how to handicap horses....anyway, Jack Fry was a buddy of my dad's from the race track. I like to think that the two of them are still hanging out at that big track in the sky since they are buried right next to each other. My dad bought his and my mom's plots from Jack. Small city we live in folks! LOL

1982 sounds right for PQN. I was married in 1981 and it was a favorite spot early in our marriage.

Maybe my problem is on the other end ... 1982 might be right for Fry's (although I could swear I remember it opening in the late '70s), but I really don't think Por Que No was around for 10 years. Maybe it started later than 1972? I'm not even sure Tumbleweed was around in '72, although the original New Albany location may have been.

The pizza place was in the building next to the restaurant in what is now J Fry's kitchen.
