Suggestions for my 1 day late Birthday Dinner

by Phil Gissen » Tue Mar 17, 2009 12:24 pm

Donna and I want to go to dinner for yesterday's birthday. Because I was sick, she picked up food at Jack Fry's for me and we ate at home watching a bizarre movie called "Breaking and Entering." Tonight, we want to have a celebratory dinner, but would like to avoid the St. Patty Day crowds. We were thinking of something we have not been to before such as:

211 Clover
Asiatique
Lillys
Patrons
Corbetts

Do you have any other ideas? Thanks.

Soon, I'm off to Carmichael's book store to get my books for the week. Carmichael's is another Louisville treasure.

I second 211 and would love to point out Basa. You'd be across the street from Irish Rover, just in case you got the itch to kiss Irishfolk...

You can't go wrong with Corbett's. If you'd like to stay closer to town, give Palermo Viejo a shot if you haven't been yet.

Those are all outstanding choices, Phil. I might choose Corbett's first, in part because it's new and very highly regarded, but I LOVE Asiatique and am very fond of 211 Clover. The Patron is very good, too, and Lilly's remains a local standard, although I find that for me, personally, it doesn't rank as near the top of my personal pantheon as it did 20 years ago.

Another strong possibility for a special-occasion blowout: 610 Magnolia.

Seviche is another top-rank for me, but I think you've been there? And/or will go for the Hats On Offline. Palermo Viejo is outstanding, too, although maybe more of a place to go as a regular than for a birthday-type occasion ...

Go with Asiatique, Phil - you can walk there, and you'll get to people-watch the St. Patty's day crowds on the way there and back. They also have a deck that might be open tonight.

Seviche is at the top of my favorites right now, but we would like to try something new. I want to avoid crowds since I am short, and it becomes next to impossible to order a drink at a very crowded bar. I invariably get into a hassle because I have to push and shove a bit to be seen. Thus, St Patty's day is tough unless I go drinking with a buddy I played pill (NYC for basketball) with. Thanks for any help you can provide. Would Asiatique be crowded?

I don't want Donna to cook number one. My cooking is best kept to a frozen pizza and bagels and lox. Also, our apartment's stove doesn't work too well and Donna is frustrated and angry cooking anything since the stove constantly malfunctions. I thought it would be nice to go out and help the economy......................

Phil,

If I were going to pick from your list for my birthday, I'd go with Corbetts since I've never been and it's getting raves on this site. It isn't very close by, but I do plan to get there soon.

A belated Happy B-Day to you!
When in doubt, add more wine.

No - I don't think Asiatique would be too crowded on a Tuesday St. Patrick's Day! I'm with Marsha on this one. And for what it's worth, Anthony Lamas would probably send you in that direction considering he and Peng Looi are good buddies!

Does Corbett's have a good bar for pre dinner cocktails?

Corbett's has a delightful bar. Bear in mind that, although the place is located in a sprawling suburban center with Costco and a mega-hospital, it is thoughtfully situated in a 150-year-old farmhouse set in such a way that you can't see the suburban sprawl from the windows. The bar is in the middle of the building, a short bar and several tables, and it's very "adult" in my opinion. Top-rank sommelier in Troy Ritchie, too, and an excellent wine/beverages program.

Thank you my bubala. We're driving back to Milwaukee Thursday night for the week-end, and my friend Ken emailed me, "I can't wait to see you my boychuk." There is something great about Yiddish. It has soul!
