Twister Closed...

by Keith D Heath » Wed Mar 11, 2009 10:48 pm

Wife and I tried to stop in at Twister on Westport Road on Tuesday only to discover that it was closed and, from all appearances, permanently. I was never a huge fan, I just hate to see another place go dark.

If you are talking about Starlite which is down at the corner of Shelbyville road and Hubbards lane, it's still open. It's actually owned by the same people that own the original Starlite over in Indiana. I don't think Twisters was owned by the same people (or at least wasn't originally).

I am a huge fan of Starlite, but not so much of Twisters. I had a couple custards from there that weren't so great. I would be surprised if they were owned by the same people.

"Twisters" just never seemed to be doing much business...evidently, had not adopted the "Cheddar's" business model across the street...

Pricing could've been the issue, for what you can buy an entire dinner for at Cheddar's you could only get about two cones! Probably part of their problem. In addition a lot of local people don't know what frozen custard is, and the suburbanites are a little less daring in their food choices.

I love Starlite! A concrete with raspberries and heath bars is like a little cup of heaven.

I did have a funny "who's on first" kind of situation there one day. My husband and I always split a concrete (they're huge! I can't handle that much sugar at once) but he was sick and I didn't want to eat after him, so when I ordered the concrete I asked for it to be put into two smaller cups. Easy enough, right? Wrong. After several confusing exchanges (including them trying to sell me a regular and a small concrete) I ended up with a concrete and an empty cup. OK, I can do it myself... but they only gave me one spoon. They seem surprised when I asked for a second one. :?

Never like to see any place close...but...I have to say this is the least surprising closing I have ever seen. My wife and I have been driving by for at least a year now asking, "How do they stay in business?" Never saw crowds there. We only went once shortly after they opened and thought it was way overpriced for what we got. So I agree about the pricing issue.

I'm disappointed. I've never gone there much, but when my son and I have done 35-55 mile bike rides out of Tom Sawyer park, a trip to Twister's on the way home was always a treat. Bummer.

The owners are friends of ours and they do own Starlite on Shelbyville Rd. and Twisters on Westport. I wasn't aware that Twister's had closed. I'll make a couple of calls.

I thought the same folks owned both, but since several folks thought the ownership was separate, I assumed I was misinformed.

Actually I thought Twister's closed during the winter season. I'll check with my wife who manages our social life and see what she knows.

I live by Twisters and have always enjoyed their fare. I have to admit I only visited during the warm months. So sad if this report of their closing is true.
Great food along with great company is truly one of lifes best treasures.

I didn't go often enough. But I really enjoyed the frozen custard. It seems that the corner there would require a significant rent roll and you'd need a business doing a lot of trade, not just in the summer time to make it work.

I always liked the custard, but hated the pricing scheme. If you wanted a small custard with Hot Fudge, you had to upgrade to a Sundae. I don't think you have to do this at Starlight. Doogy, I hope I'm mistaken as well, just reporting what we saw.
