A Good Fish Sandwich ???

by Steve P » Sun Mar 08, 2009 4:37 pm

Can anyone suggest a location for a fish sandwich that is not cornmeal (e.g. Green River, Calabash, etc) battered. I'm looking for something more along the lines of a English "fish and chips" style beer batter served on something other than rye bread.

Clarksville Seafood might do the trick but you had better BYOB "bring your own bread". Get the onion things! Call before you go.

O'Briens Tavern. Faces Flintlock Ave. which is off Dixie Highway (near Montgomery car dealer...I believe).

Checks is also very good.

I have actually heard that about Flanagan's again and again. I have to get down there and try it. Also heard they have a great Rueben, I think?

Steve P asked the sandwich not be "cornmeal" breaded. I do not believe O'briens or Checks is cornmeal.

Calabash is not corn meal battered. It's corn flower breaded. There is a difference but that's not what your looking for based on what you discribed. Sounds like your looking for a beer battered fish sandwich like in the English pubs.

If memory serves, I think BBC has a surprisingly good fish sandwich. We ended up eating at the one across from the Brown by accident and I was really impressed. I do not believe it was cornmeal.
