Frascelli's Pizzeria

by Phil Gissen » Fri Feb 20, 2009 4:24 pm

I just returned from Frascellis up in Oldham County. I had to try some New York Pizza. Darren, the proprietor, is from Brooklyn and the pizza, although no Grimaldis or Joes, is still darn good. The drive took about thirty minutes, and I don't know if I would drive just for the pizza. However, Frascelli's seems like a nice place and they have live music every Friday and Saturday nights. The deli was mediocre and I do believe Lotsa Pasta is infinitely better. I still can't get fresh buffalo mozarella...................I did drive down Covered Bridge Road into Prospect which was just beautiful. What a beautiful area. When it's time to buy a house, this would be great area. Thanks

Phil,

I don't know of anyplace in town that stocks fresh buffalo mozzerella. But they do carry it at Jungle Jim's in Cincy. It's worth a day trip if you are jonesing for more gourmet foods. Search on here for several threads about visiting it.

Could be wrong but I believe I have seen small containers of Buffalo mozzarella at both Lotsa Pasta and Whole Foods.

I am looking at Creation Gardens' website catalog (sorry, you may not be able to see it, we have an account), and they have B Mozz in three sizes. The larger sizes are special order, but they have 4.4 oz pieces for $8.95 listed.

I'm sure it's actual Buff Mozz, they are very careful with their labeling.

I thought I had got some at Lotsa in the past. One of the guys behind the counter has told me the stuff wrapped in plastic in the case(with the pate and such) as opposed to the stuff in the deli case is what they make in house.
The tall one wants white toast, dry, with nothin' on it.
And the short one wants four whole fried chickens, and a Coke.

Has anyone here ever made it? It's super-duper easy to make if you can get the curd base. Just add hot water and salt and a lot of hand-forming-mooshing love, and it's awesome.

Where do you get the Buffalo milk locally?
I've made lots of fresh mozzarella from cow's milk and some from curd- I know Heather Y. makes it too. Unfortunately, I don't know of anyplace to get the curd anymore- they stopped carrying it at Lotsa Pasta. Anybody have an alternate source?

Phil...

You might contact the "Liquor Barn", off Westport Road (near the Snyder Freeway)...they have a deli and gourmet food section that includes a sizable array of cheeses...no guarantee they'll have Buffalo Mozzarella, but it might be worth a phone call...another option would be "Fresh Market" on Shelbyville Rd., in Middletown....

Amy, I'm thrilled to be wrong on this one- the last time I looked was several years ago and I struck out big-time. I'll have to pick some up some time. :)

In the past, I've seen it often at Lotsa Pasta, imported from Italy in small plastic bags packed in brine. It's excellent, but may be only in summer (fresh tomato/caprese season).

Lotsa Pasta absolutely makes their own (wrapped as you say), and should have it daily. It's as good as we used to get at little Italian delis in Astoria. It's cows milk, though, obviously not water buffalo.

Well, I just talked to Donnie at Creation. They definitely can special order it, but he's pretty sure they have the 4 oz portions, as well....this being Friday, I'm gonna call back and talk to their buyer on Monday to make sure before I send you down there, Phil...but you need to go down there anyway!

John and Phil, I hate to be the bearer of bad tidings, but the last time I was in the Liquor Barn (within the past month), the deli was gone. Oh they still had the freezer aisle and the refrigerated cases of cheese but no more deli!

Yes, and it's not coming back ( I talked to the Manager). I'm very sad- it was my go-to place for a number of ingredients and some excellent salami's.
