Dining in Danville?

by Doug A » Wed Jan 21, 2009 3:28 pm

Daughter wants to visit Centre College in our long, but just beginning, quest to find the perfect university.

We're hoping to combine an early afternoon tour of Centre, dinner, and a trip back home after rush hour. Have done some looking and am not finding much in the way of indies in Danville. Sutton's is the only thing I've come up with and it gets OK reviews, but if we can't find something worth staying over for we'll probably just hit the road and chance running into traffic.

Anyone have any hidden gems in Danville or close enough to warrant staying in the area for dinner?

Thanks-Doug

Doug, as a not so distant Centre grad (2003), I can tell you that for all its charm, Danville is not a foodie's paradise. Your best bet would be dinner at the Beaumont Inn in Harrodsburg (10 minute drive from Centre's campus and en route back to Louisville). http://www.beaumontinn.com/dinner.htm It's VERY tasty southern food, and you can drink there now, which you couldn't in my day.

In Danville, your best bets would be Two Roads Cafe on Church Street, 2 blocks from campus, or Freddie's, a neat little un-authentic Italian place in downtown. I haven't been back to Danville in a few years, so I don't know if both are still around. I'd do the Beaumont.

Call ahead for a reservation. We ate at the "tavern" in the basement (Owl's Nest?) and it was average. The food in the main house is great!

My husband is from Harrodsburg and I can affirm that it's slim pickins down there. There's actually a pretty decent (think El Tarasco) Mexican restaurant called Guadelajara there. We ate there last week and it was good. Not La Rosita, alas.

Tell her to look at St Louis University. My daughter started there this year and I'm having a blast discovering new places there!! Better yet, go visit NYU ( ;-) )

Ooh I can't let that one slide. As a Washington University in St. Louis law grad, she should look there!

St. Louis is a great place, with a wonderful dining scene. I lived in the Central West End (close to SLU), and there is SO much going on there.

I should add that Guadalajara in Danville is pretty good (there are three of them now, I think - one close to downtown (Guaddy I), one close to the Walmart (Guaddy II), and I'm not sure where III is. At least, it was good hung over on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon.

Unfortunately Beaumont Inn's main dining room will be closed for renovation when we'll be doing the Centre tour.

Guess we're looking at Plan B now.

Wife and I have traveled to St. Louis for business quite a bit. We were impressed with the local food scene and had an awful lot of fun entertaining clients there, but that's another trip.

Appreciate all the responses-Doug

A lot of the restaurants I knew in Danville have closed since I graduated from Centre (2001), so I can't offer much in the way of suggestions. The Italian place (yes, I said THE), Freddie's, is no more, from what I hear. There was a great little Cajun spot - that's done as well. Both were downtown. I don't know where people go now!

IF it is still open, the Kentucky Depot in Stanford (not too far away) is good home cooking. You'll be able to find the address via google, or just by calling Centre. Always liked going to the Depot. Definitely a meat-and-two-vegetables + fried cornbread pancakes type of place.

Aww, Freddie's is gone? Too bad. Good suggestion on the Depot (pronounced locally as "Dee-pot").

BTW, don't know if you remember me, but I graduated in '03. You were the RA for a few of my friends in Yerkes (I think) when I was a freshman.

Anybody know how long Beaumont Inn is closed for? Love that place.

Also, the last time I was at the Beaumont in 2005, we also ate that weekend at Shaker Village, which was pretty excellent if I remember. According to Google, that's only about 16 miles away...

The main dining room is currently closed for renovations and will reopen on 02/14.

I'm an '04 Centre grad and I work at Centre now.

Shaker Village has really good classic country food. It's about a 15-20 minute drive out of Danville, but it's a really pretty drive. There are some other points of interest at Shakertown also, if you needed to kill time before or after dinner. One of my coworkers thinks Old Owl Tavern at the Beaumont Inn is good, "outstanding pub food" in his words, and apparently they have amazing cornbread. Another option that's certainly more casual but still pretty good is The Hub, which is a coffee shop/cafe attached to the Centre bookstore. They have a really wide variety of neat sandwich options, with some entrees also. Good desserts too. Brad, I'm afraid Two Roads is also closed. Joshua's Corner Cafe has the building now, but I've never been there.

Hope this helps!

Arg. Two Roads is gone too? I loved their tomato soup.

Hi Brad - yes, I was a freshman RA that year, but I was in Evans. Close enough.

Sadly, Freddie's is no more, from what I hear. I had a glass of wine with dinner there when I was in town for my 5-year reunion, and about flipped my lid. It was so novel to have a drink with dinner! Boyle County went "moist" after I graduated.
