Favorite Inexpensive Restaurants

by Paul Mick » Sat Jan 17, 2009 2:26 pm

I've been meaning to post a thread like this for a while, and Robin's recent LEO article spurred me to action.

What is your favorite inexpensive ($10 per person or less not counting tip) restaurant in town?

I'll have to go with Annie Cafe on Woodlawn. You can very easily get an appetizer and an entree for $7.50-$10. Plus, the entrees are so large that I pretty much always have leftovers to eat the next day. My favorite dish is a tie between their fried rice with Chinese sausage and shrimp and their hearty pho. As for the appetizers, I fervently stand by my belief that they have the best fresh spring rolls in town. Annie is almost always around to greet customers with her smile, and the service is always attentive. If you haven't tried it before, I highly recommend it.

As an aside, if you are looking for a unique gastronomic experience, you have to try their triple bean dessert. It consists of a parfait-like glass filled with ice, cream, cooked red beans, sugar, and something that I think might be green and white jellied fruits, but I'm not sure. (If anyone else knows what I'm talking about and can help me positively identify this ingredient, then I thank you in advance.) It is truly delicious in an unexpected sort of way.

I truly enjoy Shah's Mongolian Grill near the U of L campus. Good, cheap eats!

Goose Creek diner has a good meal for a reasonable price, depending on what you order you may be even able to squeeze in the desert to split!

I feel like I'd be hard pressed to eat at El Mundo for under $10. Under $15 would be pretty easy. . .

The tall one wants white toast, dry, with nothin' on it.
And the short one wants four whole fried chickens, and a Coke.

I've got a few inexpensive favorites:

A calzone at Clifton's ($7.99)
Two taco combo, burrito, or taquitos at Bazo's ($5.99)
Falafel or gyro and hummus at Al Wattan ($7.99)... add $2.50 for a huge piece of baklava for dessert.
Masala dosa at Bombay Grill (6.99)
Lunch menu at Oriental House ($5.99)

There are so many good inexpensive options around here that there's really no need to go to Subway, McDonald's, Taco Bell, White Castle, or any of the other "inexpensive" (fast food) restaurants... unless you're really just craving some sliders.

You got it right, Mike, but for some reason the "Disable BBC Code" box below the entry was checked, so the quote tags didn't work. You may have clicked it by accident, but I'll check your registration and make sure there's nothing funky about it.

(PS: I edited your post to fix it.)
