World Market Closing?

by Joel H » Fri Jan 16, 2009 1:42 pm

I can't find any information on the St. Matthews store, but Cost Plus is closing 26 World Market stores nationwide, including some in Cincinnati and Memphis. Anybody know if the store is closing? Thanks.

HAHAHA, I found a root beer online the other night called XXX. Someday when I open my restaurant XpizzaX it will have the root beer selection equivalent of NABC.

I did some research on Bulldog Rootbeer, and unfortunately, they do not have a local distributor for Indiana or Kentucky. World Market is a national account of theirs and distributes it internally to their own stores. I'm afraid that you would have to contact them to try and get Bulldog connected with another distributor.

Todd,

You're right, I even knew that. I phrased that incorrectly. I apologize. I found it odd though as they are like Abita, a brewery who happens to make root beer. I guess being in Portland it's hard for them to distribute this far east. Maybe they are not much bigger than NABC, maybe it's some business ethics thing? I dont know.

Doesn't Sprecher in Milwaukee do that, too?

Robin,

Yes sir they do. I like Sprecher's alright but try to avoid having it too often since they use HFCS instead of cane sugar.

Someone gave me some ingredients for making root beer for Xmas, I need to put them to use.

Eeuuww. I didn't know that. Cane sugar is why I love the soft drinks at taquerias so much ... Jarritos! Or even Mexican-made Coke. And now locally made, Havana Cola ...

Have you guys seen these ads? I felt weirdly scandalized upon viewing. Have we been wrong about HFCS all this time? Or is it a diabolical marketing ploy?

Marsha, it might be worth noting that the Website referenced in the video, sweetsurprise.com, is copyright © 2008 The Corn Refiners Association, an industry trade group.

That being said, Consumer Reports, in this blog entry, doesn't seem terribly worked up about the health issues between HFCS and cane sugar:
http://blogs.consumerreports.org/health ... ose-c.html

My issue is simple: I think foods and beverages sweetened with cane sugar simply taste better. Try it yourself: Pick up a Mexican Coke at someplace like Rosticeria Luna, take it home, and taste it side-by-side with a U.S. Coke. I find HFCS tastes way sweeter, and it's a one-dimensional, flavorless sweetness.

If you try a tasting - ideally "blind" (someone else pouring in unmarked glasses so you don't know which is which), ell us the results. :)

Still, Consumer Reports, in this blog entry, doesn't seem terribly worked up about the health issues between HFCS and cane sugar:

In a separate and maybe even more serious issue, a lot of environmentalists, including Michael Pollan, argue that the vast use of HFCS by the commercial food industry has a non-trivial impact on the planet. Good summary in this Washington Post article:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/co ... 03294.html

Bottom line, the video may not be a huge fat lie, but it slants by omission, at least.
