Dessert Shops

I'm looking for a good dessert spot. I'll be coming from Lexington so I'm only looking for a spot that's truly worth my while. I've tried The Pie Kitchen, Cake Flour, another place on Bardstown (maybe Sweetly Sophisticated or something?), and while they've each been fine, I just wanted to try something different. I heard there's a new cupcake shop on Shelbyville, anything else new? Thanks!

Go to either Cafe Lou Lou and order a dessert made by Marsha L. (I'm partial to her coconut cake, and I'm not even a real coconut lover, but the cake is so moist and melt-in-your-mouth good.)

If it's in the evening, stop by Volare and order some of Josh Moore's panna cotta. That is literally melt in you mouth delicious.

Thanks Gayle, but I was looking for a place that just did dessert - as in I can get it to take home. We're actually having dinner at Corbett's and will probably have dessert there but then I always like to take a little treat home too! I have a sweet tooth, what can I say?!

Either of those places will be more than glad to sell you their desserts in a "to go" box. When I eat out, I am almost always too full to get dessert, and I can usually pass on it, but not at Cafe Lou Lou or Volare. Dessert goes home with me in a box.

Although, I am a decent cook, I'm not much of a baker. If I am entertaining, and need a dessert, those are the two places to which I turn.

1. Sweet Surrender is likely the place you had visited. They've moved to lower Frankfort, and still have a great selection, but you wanted to try someplace new . . . .

2. Desserts by Helen has been around for a while, and is one of the best bakeries anywhere - has a location in Prospect not far from Corbett's - but is take-out only and closes around 5-5:30.

3. For later at night, we like to go to the Uptown Cafe (sister to Cafe Metro, which has the same desserts and where we also sometimes go if we want a more "deluxe" atmosphere) . . . they like to save desserts for those who dine there, but always have extras and are known for their desserts.

I'm with Gayle. I NEVER pass up an opportunity to have one of Marsha's desserts.

I was actually thinking of stopping in a place prior to dinner, so the place you mentioned might work. Thanks. It seems there was some discussion on here a good while back about a place called Q&A Sweet Treats?? Does such a place exist?

Danielle, Desserts by Helen is very good for take-away cakes, etc. There is one in Prospect, and also one on Bardstown road in the Douglass Loop area. For great chocolates (truffles, etc.), try Coco's Chocolate Cafe on Bardstown Road. They'll do boxes to go, and also have mousse and mini-cakes.

Marsha does make a mean dessert, I second Uptown, and Corbett's has good desserts as well.

There is a relatively new cupcake shop, called ironically "The Cupcake Shoppe" in St. Matthews ( very close to Lotsa Pasta if you are a foodie also interested in ingredients). I bake alot and I'm very picky about baked goods- and their cupcakes are excellent. I don't know if they have them any more, but in December they had a peppermint- frosted, chocolate cupcake that was to die for.

Note on Helen's ( I live with in walking distance to this one). While I'm a HUGE fan of Helen's plain cheesecake, I've never gotten the same quality from their baked goods if I purchase the individuals, versus buying a whole cake/cheesecake. Don't know why ( maybe they alter the recipe or they sit too long), but I'd recommend going for the whole cake/cheesecake.

Gilberto Gelato is close to Corbett's. They have wonderful gelato.

I'm glad you have heard about us! Q&A Sweet Treats certainly does exist, I am the owner and operator and we are baking daily. At this time we do not have an independent storefront but we do have several locations that carry our products. Doll's Market on Brownsboro Rd. has a great selection of ultra-decadent brownies and bars in their bakery case and they would be happy to get a box together for you. The Paul's Fruit Market location on Taylorsville Rd at 264 sells several of our cakes by the slice (as of this moment, they have Toasted Almond, Red Velvet & Lemon Curd). All of the Paul's locations, Doll's and Butcher's Best carry our packaged cookies, including the popular Coconut Macaroons and Black & Whites.

Well Corbett's was as fantastic as I remembered but we didn't make it to Paul's before they closed ): I was really looking forward to trying a piece of cake and getting a brownie and black and white cookie for my husband but we missed the early 6pm close! Next time I'm putting Paul's on the top of my list. In the meantime, you should venture down 64 towards Lexington a little bit!

Oh, I had no idea that all the Paul's Markets didn't carry her cakes! Does the one on Shelbyville Road offer the cakes by the slice?
