Poll: Ticket price for Shrimp & Grits Throwdown?

by Deb Hall » Tue Jan 06, 2009 5:09 pm

Folks,

There seems to be a lot of interest in the Shrimp & Grits Throwdown: now we need to finalize the pricing.

How much do you think folks will be willing to donate to attend this event? The evening will include substantial tastings of each of the entries ( currently 7-8 restaurants), celebrity judges, and lots of fun. (Keep in mind- that many tastings will really be dinner). Did I mention the bar will be open so you can buy libations to go with that great food? And remember, all the proceeds will go to FEAT- a very worthwhile charity.

NOTE: TO VOTE YOU NEED TO LOG IN FIRST> THE POLL WILL THEN AUTOMATICALLY ALLOW YOU TO VOTE ( ONCE)
This poll will only run for 4 days, so we can start moving forward on publicity.

Thanks!
Deb

I have no problem with a $20 price point- I assume this is tax deductible? Would that amount keep others from attending? If many more will attend at $10 then perhaps that is the way to go- I imagine no extra donations would be turned away.

Gary,

I'll have to check with the FEAT people on the amount that "may" be tax deductible ( they always say "may" for these events). But yes, I'd expect some portion may be tax-deductible, but it's only over the "value-received" - ie. the retail value of the food. So if the ticket price is low,it won't be much of the ticket price.

Did you vote for $20? It's not showing any $20 votes on the poll...

Thanks,
Deb

I figure either $5 or $10 is going to be the best price for me. Both work pretty well for my budget.

My take is that $20 may be getting a bit too high for some ($40 for a couple + drinks if you so choose), but I think $5 is WAY too low, considering this is a charity thing, and you're getting enough food to constitute your meal. You aren't going to eat for $5/person anywhere but fast food. My vote was $15, but I think anywhere from $10 to $15 is fair and affordable.

And yes, only the amount spent that you aren't getting something in return for is tax deductible. It's tough to gauge without having it pre-approved or whatever, but at $5 to $10/person I doubt anything would be tax deductible. $15 to $20+, some portion probably would be.

I know people are belt-tightening right now, but the difference $5/person vs. $10/person vs. $15/person shouldn't be too great of a stretch to anyone individually, ESPECIALLY considering you're getting dinner for that, but the difference it will make for the charity is huge.

If 200 people come, $5/person raises $1000, $10/person raises $2000, and $15/person raises $3000. That's a substantial difference.

Based on Brad's example, I vote for $15. Now if I could just figure out how to actually vote. CD

Folks,
I've updated my original post to include the instructions on how to get the poll to let you vote. If you couldn't vote before, please login to Hotbytes first and then pull up the thread again. You should be able to vote then. Let me know if there are still problems.

Thanks,
Deb

$15 seem reasonable to me, especially with a cash bar. Sounds like a fun event

Robin,

I'm showing 224 "views" for this poll, but only 38 actual votes. :?: Is that typical for polls? Or did I do something wrong in the way I set this up?

Thanks,
Deb

People coming back into the thread to see what's been posted will up the view count.

Or, just seeing what people are thinking and reading the comments without voting........

Why didn't I think of that? I'm probably personally responsible for 30 of those views....
