I don't have much use for them, either.

Contrarian: Fennel seeds are da bomb! Italian sausage just isn't right without 'em, and pizza isn't right without plenty of sausage with fennel on it.

110% in agreement with that statement. Loves me Italian sausage and it just isn't right w/o fennel seed.

I am in total agreement with you. The lack of fennel is one of my biggest gripes with Louisville style pizza.
The tall one wants white toast, dry, with nothin' on it.
And the short one wants four whole fried chickens, and a Coke.

Wow, ok, man...

Fennel seeds have thier place, I promise you. Intensified fennel pollen. I swear it is all in how you use them! Anise is rarely a primary flavor. As a secondary or tertiary flavor, though, it sings...

Anyone who uses Chinese five spice powder in their cooking or has had it in a dish while eating out has more than likely enjoyed fennel seed as well.

I love fennel seeds. And I love the Indian restaurant practice of keeping a bowlful of them at the door or the cash register for folks on their way out. Also, if you've ever bought a frozen pizza, you're probably eating fennel seeds and not even known it. It's pretty common practice to include fennel in pizza. Come to think of it, didn't somebody here comment on a local pizza place awhile back in that regard? The fact that it's a standard ingredient and most folks don't even realize it's there?

Gotta' stand on the "pro fennel" side here.
