100 Things You Simply Must Eat Before You Die

by Deb Hall » Tue Dec 16, 2008 2:34 pm

"The Best Southern Foods" ( with the above subtitle) is the front page story for last month's Garden & Gun Magazine.( If you've never heard of it- it's A high-end southern lifestyle publication).

5 Kentucky foods made the list:
Mutton Sandwich , George's Bar-b-que, Owensboro
Rolled Oysters, Mazzoni's, Louisville ( so sad and ironic, right as they closed...)
Modjeska's, Muth's Candy store, Louisville
Devil's Food Donut , Spalding's Bakery, Lexington
Inside-Out Hotbrown , Wallace Station, Versailles

I've had the Rolled oysters and the Modjeska. Anybody out there had any/all of the rest? Any Kentucky foods you think should have been included( Indiana doesn't count- this is a Southern publication :P )

Here's the link to the full article: http://gardenandgun.com/article/100-southern-foods. Personally, I plan to stick a copy of it in my car in case I end up in parts South.

I say let's make an exclusive KY list:

The Hot Brown at the Brown Hotel
If life's a Banquet, what's with all the Tofu?

Cheers!

That's not exactly Louisville or Kentucky regional cuisine, though! :D

I'd like to offer up one that isn't yet recognized as a regional classic, but I think should be: Braised short ribs with beans and greens at Limestone.

Kuchen at Heinz's, maybe?

I can only claim the Modjeska, and since mazzoni's is gone, I could only ever get 4/5.

I've had the first three. I can't say that the last two whelm me anyway.

Paul's has modjeskas, by the way, for anyone interested in picking off that item ...

Try Flabbys in Germantown .. same owner as Mazzonis. They have the rolled oysters. Hope they are not having to close because of Mazzonis problems.
