Light Up Louisville

by Steve Bryant » Fri Nov 21, 2008 9:18 pm

I'm going to be a vender at the Light Up Louisville event. Will I freeze my butt off? We have to be ready to serve by 2:30 and can't start breaking down until 10:00 that night. I'm not used to this cold weather up here. Have any of you guys done this before and if so, how do you deal with this cold. I know that I'm going to have a 10x10 tent with no sides and 2 tables. I don't even know where they are going to put me. Maybe I'll be backed up to a building somewhere that will block off the wind. Who knows. I can always hope.

Well, obviously, long underwear and lots of layers. And hand warmers. And definitely a hat.

All I know is you're gonna have some of the best food there. I will check it out. Just dress warmly. Maybe even rent a portable gas heater.
Great food along with great company is truly one of lifes best treasures.

Hi Steve . . . Melillo's will be serving mulled wine in the Pub area. That'll keep you warm :)

I think Anne and I have one of the coldest spots for Light Up. We will be high atop the Home Life building for the fireworks. There is no place up there thats out of the wind.
The tall one wants white toast, dry, with nothin' on it.
And the short one wants four whole fried chickens, and a Coke.

This sounds like something Gary and I might enjoy, only I really don't have a clue what it is.... What the heck is Light Up Louisville all about? What happens? Where does one go to enjoy it?... etc.

It's the community lighting of the city's big downtown Christmas tree. Out front of the Courthouse at Sixth and Jefferson and in the streets surrounding.

The name, believe it or not, has a double meaning that goes back to, I think, Brown & WIlliamson tobacco once being headquartered here and was its major sponsor ... its literal sense means light the lights, but there was also supposedly a subliminiable ;) encouragement to fire up your ciggies.

Yikes. Ciggies.... But from the note about vendors, and the like, am I to understand there will be ancillary activity like eating and drinking on the street? Or is it mostly that restaurants will be engaging in the festivities simply by being open? Does it draw big crowds? I'm imagining something like Taste of Chicago, but that's maybe a stretch.

Cool. And a schedule too. Thanks!

Um, although truthfully, I'm not sure how the "green" LED lights on the tree will work.... From googling, LED lights sound as if they'll be better than the fluorescent bulbs (which I have to admit I stopped using because the light is godawful compared to the traditional incandescent bulb), but so far the info I'm getting is from people selling them, so not exactly unbiased assessments.... For me, fluorescent is okay in office and government buildings and the like, but not in my house. Or anyway not where I spend a lot of time.

A few years ago I tried the fluorescent bulbs and didn't like them at all. But the newer models get bright much faster and are remarkably more like traditional light bulbs. We've converted completely over (except for the chandelier--that didn't work at all).

Thanks Charles, I'll take another look, although it was only last year we tried the fluorescent. Have they changed since then? I felt guilty putting the incandescent bulbs back in, but the light from the fluorescent was just depressing.

After they burn in for a while, they take on a more yellowish look. I've got them everywhere except the chandelier, but I use that for ~8 hours a year.

Steve
We did street vending for years Dickens’s on Main Street now light up Louisville
Make sure you have good socks and shoe’s gloves not to heavy so you can make change
That’s the main thing get plenty on 1’s 5’s 10’s we found most people bring big bills 20’s and 100’s and there’s no place to get change at night
Good Luck
