Breakfast lifts Lynn's to 3 stars in CJ review

by Robin Garr » Sat Sep 13, 2008 11:41 am

The CJ allows extended space (789 words) for Marty's review again, but he uses about a third of it for a long, shaggy-dog joke about taking the European Ryder Cup team there for breakfast every day so they'll be too full to play well. The rest of the column is straightforward, with high praise for Lynn's breakfasts and a bit less for dinners ("The theme of abundance continues into the dinner menu, but get away from the classics and flavors tend to be a bit more hit-and-miss"); so overall, the 3-star rating seems fair. One odd note: The copy editor couldn't fit "Paradise" into limited space, so the headline telescopes the restaurant to "Lynn's Cafe," which gets the idea across but isn't really its name.

Lynn's gets high marks for breakfast which I agree with but isn't even on the voting list for best breakfast in WLKY's A List competition. Go figure!

Did Marty have breakfast the last time during a world war?

"Let's face it, in Europe, breakfast usually amounts to a few chunks of leftover cheese, a slice of bread and, if you're lucky, a sliver of cantaloupe."

Really?

I didn't want to be the one to say it, Heather. ;)

Marty used to have some cred around here. Am I sensing it slowly waning away? Is it his fault or Gannett's? Maybe some of both?
Great food along with great company is truly one of lifes best treasures.

I think Marty has plenty of cred. He's erudite, and he knows his food. I can't imagine what it must be like to work for Gannett these days, though. Bottom line, anybody can screw up - I've certainly done it! - and his comment about European breakfast would seem awfully odd, if taken seriously. My guess is that it was a shot at a joke that didn't work out.

I think he probably lost a lot more credibilty by giving Lynn's a 3 star review than he did by discussing European breakfast items. Lynn's is just plain bad.

I guess I'd have to disagree that Lynn's is "just plain bad" but I would say their pricing is high.

I haven't been to Lynn's for quite some time, but I'm inclined to agree with Brian, Clay. I find it good, not great, but wouldn't call it "just plain bad" at all. I do cringe sometime when I see major national media listing it as one of Louisville's top restaurants, though. I think that got started because it's close to downtown (easy access for visiting food writers) and it's just plain "cute."

That was a good one, Heather! I understand the point that Marty is trying to make about breakfast in some European countries. But talk about hyperbole. It seems like the last time he had breakfast in Europe was at some cheap hostel in his backpacking days (If he even had backpacking days).

Different strokes and all that jazz, but I'd rather have breakfast at Dairy Queen. And I used to love Lynn's food back when it first opened on Frankfort Ave.

While the old saying goes that everyone is entitled to an opinion, I certainly disagree with this opinion of yours. Lynn's certainly doesn't have the best food in town but it's decent and the atmosphere is very unique. It's certainly a place to take visitors just for its eccentricity! Breakfast is certainly their best meal as demonstrated by the throw-down victory over Bobby Flay. I do agree with Robin that the pricing tends to be a little steep but what isn't these days.

As far as Dairy Queen goes they have very good biscuits and gravy and ice cream but that's about it.

I would agree that Lynn's has become the place for non-Louisvillians to eat. I don't think it's bad. I do think it's over priced. It's never been the same for me since it moved from Frankfort Ave.

We last had dinner there about a year ago...no complaints but we've have not been in a rush to go back.

Now, THERE's a note from an old-timer! :D

You mean, of course, where the Jamaican place used to be and where Little Bit of Seoul later used to be?
