Locals Near Corner of Hurstbourne and Shelbyville...

by Keith D Heath » Mon Aug 11, 2008 5:28 pm

Please help me out guys, I'm looking for local places to support at lunchtime. My office is on the corner of Hurstbourne and Shelbyville and here are my requirements: 1) I'd like to stay within a 5 or 10 minute drive; 2) it needs to have a lunch menu or otherwise be fairly inexpensive. My List so far:

1) Yankee Noodle
2) Bristol
3) Shiraz
4) Heitzman's Deli
5) Impelizzari's
6) Ernesto's (for some reason I think its funny that ethnic eateries are almost always "local")

If you know of any other places, please help me out.

A few more for you: Shalimar Indian, India Palace, and the new Bombay Grill make for an Indian trifecta, if you like Indian. I think they all have lunch buffets. El Toro Mexican, near Shalimar in the shopping center with Liquor Barn.

1. Jason's Deli (North Hurstbourne)
2. Corner Cafe (Lyndon)
3. Fresh Market (Shelbyville Road) excellent sushi and other lunch items
4. Tiffany's Cellar Cafe (Middletown)
5. The Grapevine Pantry (Middletown)
6. Mark's Feed Store (Middletown)
7. Joe's O.K. Bayou (Plainview)

From Shelbyville Road out to Middletown is definitely close to your 10 minute mark, but it is worth it for the variety!

You could try Z's oyster Bar and Steakhouse. Although dinners can be pricey, they have excellant food at a decent price at lunch.

The Cheddar Box cafe is one of my favorites! They are down Shelbyville around Evergreen. They get so busy during lunch that sometimes there is a wait for table, but there is a small counter to eat at though.

OK, maybe I'm missing something, but Jasons, Fresh Market, and Home Run Burgers are national chains, NOT local places.

For local (in addition to others recommended):

Sesame (right on corner! not the best Chinese, but decent)
Further East on Hurstbourne are Turkey Joe's, Tony Boomboz, and (for lunch) Limestone (more expensive for dinner)
West on Hurstbourne are Shalimar (and - in the same shopping center - the Chinese Buffet, good & with a primarily Asian clientele)
In Stoneybrook are the old Two Hans and the new Thai replacement for Sala Thai
Around the Cheddar Box are Pig City and Mazzoni's

Happy Eating!

That's a chain, but nonetheless very good! Another good chain is McAlister's Deli (N. Hurstbourne).

Brownie's on Whittington Parkway has also been mentioned here. And then there is J. Gumbos on Lyndon Lane. Mazzoni's, Pig City BBQ, and Alley Cat Cafe in Middletown are great!!!

My favorite Chinese place used to be Wang's Wok. but sadly they went downhill quite awhile ago... They ended up closing, right?

And I thought of Limestone too...not inexpensive, but they have a great lunch buffet!!!

Wang's Wok is now Liu's Garden (11517 Shelbyville) . . . Robin gave it a decent two-sentence review, but I haven't been there.

Actually the couple who owned it got divorced and she ran it for awhile. She then opened Jasmin on Shelbyville road near Lake Forest and her mother took over Wang's Wok and renamed it.

While Limestone is not "super cheap" eats, their lunch buffet is excellent food and quite a deal. Haven't been for a while now that I'm working downtown, but it included soup, entrees and dessert (including their incredible bourbon bread pudding the last time I was there).

I think Goose Creek Diner is within your 10 minute limit- I always make it in around 6, but I can be a speed demon.
Really good totally unpretentious diner food. I am addicted to their chicken livers.

Thank you, Andrew, for educating me on Jason's Deli ... I was not aware they were a chain. I'll do more research before posting next time. Also, it was my understanding from the sushi chef himself at The Fresh Market that he was a local contracting with Fresh Market for his sushi. I must have misunderstood him. Thanks for the update ... regardless, I still love his sushi.
