What's good in Hikes Point?

by Mike Hardin » Thu Jul 24, 2008 7:57 am

We just moved to the Hikes Point area (we're in the triangle created by Furman, Hikes and Taylorsville) and don't know the restaurants in the area. Is the El Nopalito comparable to the one on lower Brownsboro? What about any hole in the wall places that we should try?

Mike, I'm afraid it's not a target-rich environment, but you've got Al Watan (Palestinian) right over on Goldsmith Lane just a block south of Hikes Lane, and it's excellent. There's a new little bakery - sorry I can't think of the name just now - near the Kmart on Taylorsville that's getting good reviews.

And of course you can head just north of the Watterson to Dupont Circle and Wild Eggs, or shoot in Taylorsville to Bowman Field for Queen of Sheba Ethiopian or, of course, Le Relais.

On out to J'town and Hurstbourne and you'll find a few local jewels (Sala Thai, for instance) among all the chains. And you're not really all that far out from the Bardstown Road strip. :)

I'm sure I've overlooked some, but there's a start.

The bakery is called Small Times Bakery. I'd link the website, but it appears to be down at the moment. For a pretty good sandwich, you can go to Paul's fruit Market on Taylorsville Road. They sell Boar's Head lunchmeats, and make custom sandwiches at the deli counter.

I'm sorry to report that Sala Thai will be closing thier doors this week.

I got some carry out Monday and was informed of it by the owners daughter.

A total bummer...However, the China King next door is pretty good for a "Chopsick House" type of place but is nowhere near a replacement for Sala Thai.

Yep, out here in J'town my local favorites are Hero's pizza on Watterson Trail; Right across the street is El Nopal(the absolute best of the Mexican places out this way) and Maggie's on Taylorsville Rd.

Of course we have Steak and Shake and Culver's as well!

That's terrible news about Sala Thai, Dan! I'll post it as a separate thread.

Hero's is a great call, can't believe I forgot it. A bit of a hike for Mike out from Furman, but not all that far for the best NYC pizzeria scene in town by far.

I think Al-Watan is on Klondike Lane in the old Whollebs (sp?).

Has anyone tried the Mexican restaurant across the street from Al Watan's? The name escapes me at the moment, but it is a tiny place towards Hikes Ln in the strip mall. I noticed it last night when I was picking up dinner from Oceanside Seafood (which is another great option in the area).

You are correct, Robin. My bad ... I know the difference between Klondike and Goldsmith, really I do ...

Bosna Mak has excellent Bosnian food, and they are located right next to Jasmin Bakery. I believe the address is 3825 Bardstown Road.

We haven't eaten there in several months, but our Greyhound adoption group used to have monthly dinners at the Pizza Place on Richland, behind the old Hungry Pelican, across from Baskin-Robbins, near Walgreens.

The food there is excellent, particularly the sandwiches. NOTHING there is fried, including the "French fries", which is a bonus. Very generous portions; moderate prices.

A "family place" with lots of kids, soccer teams, etc. I think the Louisville Fire team still meets there for meals in the private room. Separate bar area.

You can always stop in The Bluegrass Bistro. We are located on the lower level of Derby City Antique Mall at 3819 Bardstown Rd (http://www.BluegrassBistro.com). We are open for lunch 11-3 Monday thru Saturday. Come in for lunch and spent the rest of the day shopping in the wonderful mall.
If you keep looking back, you will miss what's ahead....

The Mexican restaurant is El Rey and has been previously reviewed by Robin in Hot Bytes. For long term residents Rey developed the recipies at the decades old Chico's at Hikes Point. After Chico's moved into the old Sandrella's building, Rey fell out with Bob and opened Mama Rosa and Rey's in an old Pizza Hut in McMahan Plaza. Mama and Rey fell out and Rey left to open the current place. Mama's closed. Some of the current servers worked at Chico's. Rey's food is exactly the same as it was at Chico's.

Robert,
I know which restaurant you are talking about, but this one is new, I think, and you can see it from the parking lots of Al Watan and Oceanside looking across Klondike. I think it starts with a "C".

This place should have a historical plaque (or maybe hysterical) in front.
This is the location of the very first go-go girl place in Louisville. Very busy operation.
