Dynasty Buffet - Temporary Shut Down??

by Doug W » Tue Jun 24, 2008 1:15 pm

I went to Shane's Rib Shack to day for lunch - I find myself grabbing lunch there once or twice a week lately. Shane's was great, as usual.

Anyway, I couldn't help but notice the three or four signs outside of Dynasty Buffet saying "Sorry, We are close." My friend said he saw something on WHAS about workers, but didn't really remember anything about anything being wrong. After we finished lunch and were headed to the car, we noticed a big red "C" on the door. Well, the fine print on the Health Department posting was just begging to be read. It turns out that they were shut down immediately by order of the Health Department for critical violations. No details were listed - I suppose it may be on the web site. The percentage score was 58%.

I've been avoiding buffets for awhile now, but anyone trying to get your chinese fix at the Dynasty Buffet should make alternative plans at least for a few days.

Cheers,

Doug W.

That's absolutely frightening!

Funny, too, I used to think that Dynasty was one of the better buffets.

So I guess in Health Dept lingo a "C" is not average? I guess an F means they call in the CDC.

The letter grade is one of the first things I look for when I am going into a restaurant to eat. It's one of my quirks ... I won't eat in a restaurant with anything less than an "A". I'd be running the other direction at full pace if I ever saw a "C". [Shudders]

here is how the scoring works
http://www.louisvilleky.gov/NR/rdonlyre ... acards.pdf

Here is their most current score

It was something that could not be corrected immediately, so to keep everyone safe they had to close in order to properly correct it.

Here's to hoping they can correct it properly and get back to business!

I always thought Dynasty was pretty good as well. I never really like the idea of the mongolian grill, but everything else seemed okay.

Between Shane's Rib Shack and Tokyo across the street, I think I'll survive though!!

Cheers,

Their inspection history is not good, never earned an A.

I have it on good authority that the health inspectors have been out and about last week, and were a lot tougher than usual almost to the point of obnoxious..... that could have something to do with it.
However, you are right, they in particular do not have a good track record.

There is an inspector, I do not know the name nor would I disclose, who is extremely critical and occasionally insulting to owners, managers, and operators, but that sort of thing usually only becomes an issue on ticky-tack calls like having you roll-towel dispenser too high or low over your kitchen hand sink or having an employee beverage in the dish area (not food prep area, a sure no-no, but in the dish area, usually an "ok" zone). Critical violations are usually big issues. Which inspector you get will make no difference if C violations are in evidence.

On the flip side, critical issues once addressed are usually corrected and as long as the following ratings are A's things should be ok. I can recall Nancy's Bagel Grounds getting a "C" once for a dishwasher mechanical issue only. The dishwasher was fixed in two days and the C was quickly replaced with an A.

That C can be a mark of death and quite frankly they scare the hell out me to the point that I can be overly meticulous regarding cleanliness.

Well isn't THIS a cool thing...As soon to be L'ville residents, one of the (major) things that drew us to the area was the food scene. We had no idea such a health dept. grading system was in place. Assuming the system is fair (??) it sounds like a wonderful thing. Here in Oklahoma City (where we are currently serving penance for some unknown transgression) it would seem that if the door key still fits the lock since closing time the previous night that the place is good to go. Case in point, 12 of my students recently came down with some kind of foodbourne illness after a night at "Buffalo Wild Wings". In a nutshell the corporate response was "so sue us". Sounds like this kind of thing might not fly in L'ville. A public grading system... Outstanding...good for you all.

Steve,
We hope to have you in Louisville soon. I have to say that your situation wouldn't fly in Louisville. We recently had an outbreak of illness in Shelby County KY at a well respected establishment. There were no serious violations, only a substandard employee. Regardless they closed for days until the source was determined. The Louisville dining scene is excellent. For Independent restaurants we rank amoung the best in the country. There will always be bad operators no matter where you are. In Louisville the strong survive and thrive and the outcome is tremendous. I welcome you to Louisville as I am sure my other forumites do as well. When you transplant please try the diverse restaurant scene and share your comments!
Kurt
