Beer Beer Wonderful Beer!

by David Clancy » Sat May 24, 2008 4:29 pm

Hi All. Robin has graciousley allowed me to post regarding Carly Rae's beer upgrades (it's a work in progress and lacks Belgians but is, nevertheless, leaps and bounds above the previous selections) Hat's off to Garrett for moving us in the right direction!

ON TAP-Browning's ESB
-Browning's Bourbon Barrel Stout
-Cumberland Brewery Red Ale
-Browning's She Devil
-Magic Hat #9
-Leinenkugel Sunset Wheat
BOTTLES-Boont ESB/Chambly Noire/La Fin Du Monde/Boont Amber/Rouge Dead Guy/Skullsplitter/Bell's Oberon/Anchor Amber/Newcastle/Sierra Nevada Pale/Bass Pale Ale/Hardcore Cider/Red Stripe/Old Rasputin Imperial Stout/BBC Amber/BBC APA/BBC Dark Star Porter/ Stella Artois/ Red Seal Ale/ Abita Purple Haze/ Abita Turbo Dog/ Blue Moon/ Killians/Beck's/ Guinness/ Sam Adams/ Heinekin/ Corona.

DOMESTICS- (The usual suspects)

Anyway, stop into Carly Rae's for a frosty mug (and some groovy food too) Thank's again to Robin for allowing this shameless promotion!

I'm not a beer dude per se but Magic Hat has just come on the local market (still waiting for Fat Tire) and Garrett is moving the beer program where it needs to go..... (I just wish that Roger could ferry some of his stuff across the river, maybe under cover of darkness,(I'll steer) so we could all enjoy ALL of the local suds) Oh Well....some day!

I've heard the Cumberland Brews are nigh undrinkable since they fired Matt.
I don't think I can support them anymore...
Heard his firing was done down low and dirty.

Hi Matthew! Can't speak of Matt's departure (heard lot's of vitriol etc.) but I do think (as I recollect from BBC) that Cameron Finnis has taken on the brewing challenges @ Cumberland and, although he is Canadian, I think he is quite capable from what I have seen. Note: I am NOT a beer dude and am but a mere observer in the spectacle that is local brewing......

Well I hope he can handle the full rig, going from apprentice to master overnight is no easy task.
I wish him luck! I know the brewer is just an employee of the owner.

PS. There are lots of great Canadian beers... like Fin Du Monde and the rest of the Unibroue stable.

congrats senior Clancy

but i can't believe you mentioned the top two over rated beers in the same post (fat tire and magic hat #9) both breweries brew far better beer than these watered down over rated poor examples of micro brewing (fat tire is to american micros what stella artois is to belgian beer)

on the other hand though

"ON TAP-Browning's ESB
-Browning's Bourbon Barrel Stout
-Cumberland Brewery Red Ale
-Browning's She Devil
-Magic Hat #9
-Leinenkugel Sunset Wheat"

3 locals on tap is pretty nice, where's the bluegrass though??

"BOTTLES-Boont ESB/Chambly Noire/La Fin Du Monde/Boont Amber/Rouge Dead Guy/Skullsplitter/Bell's Oberon/Anchor Amber/Newcastle/Sierra Nevada Pale/Bass Pale Ale/Hardcore Cider/Red Stripe/Old Rasputin Imperial Stout/BBC Amber/BBC APA/BBC Dark Star Porter/ Stella Artois/ Red Seal Ale/ Abita Purple Haze/ Abita Turbo Dog/ Blue Moon/ Killians/Beck's/ Guinness/ Sam Adams/ Heinekin/ Corona."

Boont ESB and Amber from Anderson Valley is great (plus they are a super green brewery - solar power...etc) - bring in the hop ottin' it will sell very well, i promise

the unibroue selections are nice (the chambly noire is a little bland and i find the stroy behind it to be pretty offensive to the natives of the americas) the la fin is great though - the trois pistoles instead of the chambly will serve you well

lets see

bell's = good
rogue = good
sierra = good
north coast and anchor are always good choices as well as Abita

the skullsplitter does take me off guard a little, you may as well bring in another high alcohol monster to balance it out (dogfish raison d'extra or world wide stout?? rochefort 10 or st bernardus 12 ???)

i'm only truly offended by the stella artois (yes, i know it sells well, but that doesn't improve the taste or the stain on belgian beer culture)

nice variety, good selection of american standard micros
a few standard english beers - you're missing the samuel smith

WHERE are the GERMANS?? and no, becks doesn't qualify

i'll have to come by and have a beer

maybe next monday after the holiday

I had one not so long ago and I really know what you're saying. Flavorless beyond belief. Artful campaign.

Hi Shawn. All of your points are well taken and we are working on all of them (more Germans/Belgians/ English/Independents). Input from you and everyone else in the beer world will only help us create a world class list and that is, ultimately, the goal (I want Upland and Dogfish as well and Stella is poop in my book) Thank's and do stop in for a cold one, as I'd love to catch up on stuff. Having that beer selection despite the amount of storage space, location, and bar size is pretty damn awesome.

Will agree on the fat tire but #9 isn't so bad :). You definately know your beers Shawn. Those are some heavy hitters.

Rochefort 10 is near impossible because they are the most expensive beer to buy or sell per quantity. To make around 30% liquor cost on it would take you around 15 dollars and 10 dollars for around 50% liquor cost for a 10 ounce beer. It is the best beer inside of our state lines ,in my opinion.

St. Bernardus 12 is absolutely amazing and taste very similar to a Westvleteren 12.I did a side by side tasting i ordered a case of 12 750 ml of the St.Bernardus 12 for almost a year and recieved 1 in that time. They sent me the Triple 10 some of the time, just not the same. Wasn't available for a long time.

Dogfish Raison D'extra .... some of my friends love it. It's just to cloying and syrupy for me. To much punch , not enough balance.
Dogfish World Wide Stout is delicious but it's one of the rarest beers to come across in Louisville ,especially for a bar and not a liquor store.

Gulden Carolous Grand Cru,Rodenbach, Schneider Eisbock, Weihenstephaner Hefe * the original recipe*, Orval, Gulden Draak * my favorite, Piraat, Unibroue Blanche De Chambly, Abbaye de Rocs *any*, Brooklyn Brewery Double Chocolate Stout *seasonal* , and Hitachino Nest Japanese Classic Ale are some of the beers I can't find anymore but i know we can carry them. Actually alot more that would suprise you. Like anything else *artisian or imported* they are hard to come by until more bars start keeping inventory on them.

The Chouffe's are notorious for being the brattiest foamest thing on the planet. They need such low PSI that you need a seperate or dedicated hose to the single keg.Man, are they good though.

Matt is a great brewer and nice guy. I didn't know it was a bad break up. Do you know if he moved elsewhere or still in town? I have noticed their keg handles popping up in town now.

Haven't yet heard where he's popping up...
But if someone wants to get into the Brewpub business there is an A+++ brewer out there needing a home.
Makes me wish I had DCE paid off so I could open a brewpub next door!
Matt if you read this get in touch with me and lets go investor hunting!
I've got a great downtown location!

Lots of ground to cover here ... I'm not commenting on Matt's situation, primarily because I've not yet heard the "other" side of the story, and fairness ordains considering it. But Matt surely knows that NABC has his back.

The selection at Carly Rae's looks promising. I've not had the Magic Hat and can't comment, but Fat Tire is as overrated as they come (the Colorado brewery does numerous quality Belgians and permits Fat Tire to pay the bills), and Stella is a plain European lager that does not represent what makes Belgium special.

As a brief update, NABC has embarked on the path toward an additional brewhouse in downtown New Albany. Perhaps a year from now, we'll have sufficient quantity of our beer to get it to interested parties in Louisville. We're working on a distribution plan, but don't look for anything for a while yet. The taproom will be running first, then the brewing system installed.

Hey Brand - love your avatar! I'm partial to the Ruination as opposed to the Arrogant Bastard. Does anyone know where or if you can get any Stone's on tap around here?

Cheers,

Often at Maido, to name just one. We rotate Stone drafts on a semi-regular basis and are about due for a Ruination residency.
