Chick Inn delights CJ

by Robin Garr » Sat Apr 19, 2008 9:53 am

Marty gives a glowing if rather concise (533-word) review to Chick Inn this week, headlining it "A-list fried chicken" and going on to declare its fried chicken "the absolute best I've ever found." I'm not sure I would concur, although certainly Chick Inn's product is very good. Curiously, he does not mention service, which I've found consistently problematic in many visits since the Inn's management change. Overall, unless he's rating on the quality of the chicken alone, I'd say his three-star rating is a bit on the generous side.

If you want to sample some insanely good fried chicken, you ought to make the drive up interstate 71 to the Greyhound Tavern. They have all you can eat chicken with family style side dishes on Monday and Tuesday nights.

Another nominee is Cottage Inn, which seems to have gotten even better under its new Bosnian owners. Don't forget Flabby's fried-chicken-on-weekends, too.

I think I have gotten better consistency at KFC in terms of service and food quality. OK, maybe not. Maybe Marty had an "out of body " experience at Chick Inn, but to bestow "the absolute best I've ever found" statement to their chicken is a bit ambitious. I will agree, however, that when it is good, it is really good.

In all fairness, Marty is an honest and ethical man. I would be amazed to ever see him shade a review in favor of a relative, friend or acquaintance. He may have an occasional failure of skepticism colored by delight (as indeed do I!), but I truly believe that what he writes is what he thinks.

We've found the Chick Inn to be a good version of heavily battered chicken, but we also strongly dislike a heavy batter!

Our favorite in the area is at the Chicken House in Sellersburg IN, maybe a 10 minute drive north of IU-Southeast. They only serve it on weekend nights, it's made to order in a cast iron skillet, and you get to listen to country kareoke while dining!

The new Chick Inn is certainly not as good as it used to be. The chicken itself is OK, not spectacular but the service is spotty at best. The old place used to be a fun destination on a nice day, now it's only a place to eat if you're in the area and hungry!

That's just about exactly my feeling, Mark. Still a nice place to go, but it lost a little something when they built the new place after the fire, and it lost a little more when the ownership changed. Unless they've really turned the service around in the last few months, I'm amazed that Marty didn't have any problems with pacing or other service issues.

How far up 71? I'm always looking for a place to go with my relatives who live in Smithfield.

Re: Chick Inn delights CJ: A GHASTLY EXPERIENCE

...cruising on a gorgeous day, I cell phoned this establishment for a chicken dinner to go (Chicken, slaw,salad)..
..was told "cooked to order" and 25 minutes.....arrived in 35 mins only to find a meager crowd ( possibly at nearby Cunningham s whose parking lot was on overflow) and a 15 min additional wait....

..Take Out Chicken arrived sliding noisely around in a foam box and both side orders missing(so, 10 more minutes)...

I had to pack all the items myself and beg for napkins, etc....

I arrived home only to open the box and find the chicked B U R N E D..!!!..... To me, that s hard to do if a cook is paying any attention at all. The two bites I had tasted and smelled of grease/oil which had been around way to long !!.... a copious amount of same coated the foam box interior and made sliding the product in the garbage easier, I admit.....

If fairness, the slaw was quite good, salad resembled airline food, but the napkins were suffice.,

How long after the fire did it change hands?
