2020, we hardly knew ye. Now get out of here!

2020, we hardly knew ye. Now get out of here!

Happy New Year! Anybody out there who isn’t happy to see 2020 go, raise your hand!

[cupping ear, looking around]

I didn't think so. This has been a strange, tumultuous, and downright scary year. Sure, it's had some high spots. We're looking at you, Joe and Kamala! But the arrival of a pandemic that none of us saw coming at this time last year turned 2020 into a swirling black whirlpool that didn't make anyone happy. <!--more-->

A year ago at this time, who knew where Wuhan, China, was? Or what's a coronavirus? Something to do with Mexican beer? And Covid? Nope. It may seem like an eternity since we learned about masking up, social distancing, sanitizing everything, washing our hands and keeping them away from our faces ... yes, what a long, strange trip it's been.

And even all this seems trivial to those who've lost family members and friends to the disease. That, of course, is the worst outcome of all. Even with a vaccine and a possible end to the pandemic and a new normal on the distant horizon, there's no way to replace what has been lost.

The restaurant, bar, and entertainment industry has been hard hit too. Dozens of local institutions are gone forever, and many more are struggling as we move into the cold months of winter. The loss of those businesses spells the loss of jobs and income for thousands more local families, and that's more bad news.

There just aren't any winners on this journey, and even if we console ourselves by assuming that new backers will eventually raise new money and bring new businesses and new jobs to those shuttered spaces, we have to know that nothing is ever going to be quite the same.

Let's take a moment as we approach the year's end to remember favorite spots that have gone and won't be back. While some of the long-term institutions drew gasps of pain when their closing was announced – Couvillion, Eiderdown, Harvest, Migo, Milkwood, North End, Rye, Uptown and Z's all did that to me – there is no joy in the loss of any of these places. Not counting fast-food operations, corporate chains, or single units of local multiple-shop groups (although those, too, matter), here's my list of 30 local, independent eateries that have closed completely during the year. Some were billed as retirements or lost leases, but it's reasonable to assume that Covid-19 can claim them, too, as victims.

Restaurants opened during the pandemic

Meanwhile, let’s raise up a shout for these bold entrepreneurs who opened restaurants during the pandemic. Adding to a list I published last summer, I now count a dozen-plus new locally owned and operated eateries. Let’s give them our applause and our support:

Barcelona Bistro Bar
La Chandeleur
Emmy Squared Pizza
Faces Bar/Bistro
Gourmet Provisions
Jaggers
I Love Tacos Louisville
Jake and Elwood’s
Legacy Pizza and Bakery
Marisqueria Vallarta
Maya’s American Kitchen

I hope I'm wrong, but I think we'll look back on 2020 as the start of really bad times with 2021 being the peak.

I think there's some kind of mystic feeling that as soon as we turn the calendar to 2021 -- for some, Jan 20 -- things have got to start getting better. It's human nature to hope for that. We're nowhere close to calculating all the permanent damage that was done and I don't think we can even see the bottom yet, much less start moving up from it.

Unfortunately I think that list of lost restaurants is going to get a lot longer by next December.

i hope you're wrong too, Mike, but yeah, there's a good chance that the downturn has a way to go before it curves up, even with a vaccine. I wanted to try to end the year with a whiff of hope, though. Let's see ...

Pollo on Lower Brownsboro, owned by the Six Forks people. The Pollo website now just rolls over to Six Forks, so it doesn't look good.

A nice piece to top off the end of the year. I'll be interested to read Food and Dining Magazine's count when their latest edition comes out hopefully soon.

I just got back from my native St Louis after a 3-day stint there for the holidays. St Louis has more counties and a city government in the metro area. If you live in St. Louis County (North/South), you can't eat indoors. So I met with folks once in St Charles, and once in the City of St. Louis. Ironically, on Monday evening, the restaurant where I ate with a friend didn't have an open table when we left. The waiter said it was likely due to folks coming across the city line to dine in.

They are hurting there like anywhere else. The lose of the baseball season in addition to everything else was brutal. Busch Stadium averages about 40,000 fans per game with about 30% coming from out of town. This is averaged over 81 games. Tough loss. My one friend who works downtown says its like a ghost town.

I spoke with a guy some time ago who had just moved back to Louisville from Raleigh, NC. He said there were a lot of empty towers downtown. I had a conversation with one of my St Louis friends about this as well. There are a lot of empty glass and steel towers in downtown St. Louis that will be difficult to convert into anything but business space. Many cities will have to deal with this in the months and years ahead. I think Louisville is fortunate in this regard as we didn't overbuild these types of building. I think our layout and dynamics, as well as our attention to the food industry, make for an easier recovery than many other cities.......we'll see.

Kai Lana Sushi, 6435 Bardstown Road.

Kai Lana has been replaced/bought out by Asiana Sushi. It turned over in a couple weeks, I am pleased to report. Same good sushi with new additions.

I just read an article about a burger place opening in the Chilakiles spot on National Turnpike. Chilakiles website is still live but it comes up as closed on google. :(
