Three CJ stars for Captain's Quarters

by Robin Garr » Thu Jun 25, 2015 7:59 am

The CJ gives Captain's Quarters 3 stars. I'm not sure what else there is to say, so I'll leave that to you ...

Well...I'd eat there after that review. Shame about the overly hot noodles.

Is there a different CQ occupying the same space and time as the CQ that always gives me 5 star treatment?

I do certainly agree that there service is always first rate but their food while good it's certainly not deserving of a perfect rating. Considering how she has rated other restaurants I certainly don't understand the 3 star rating for this one!

Admittedly I haven't been in a couple years, but food was garbage the last couple of times I went.

I'm not ready to go that far. I've liked their Sunday brunch and been okay with dinner every time I've been, but I agree that it's more a destination for the great riverside ambience than for extraordinary food. I can't complain, though.

But I did think something about the style of the review didn't quite work for me, although I couldn't quite put my finger on it.

Perhaps the newspaper in which it was published? I'm just ribbing you, Robin, and I'm not really defending her, but if the Odyssey was first published in the CJ, you wouldn't care for it either.

Please take no offense, as we all have our biases. Sean Hannity could cure the common cold and I would say he did it wrong.

I'm not taking offense exactly, Dan, but that's really a fairly stupid response. I've frequently praised Dana McMahan's reporting in the CJ here, for instance, and an occasional piece by Jere Downs. I generally commented weekly on Susan Reigler's reviews, because they needed that. Let Marty slide, although his style wasn't really my style. But I can't help noticing that the new reviewer is ... umm ... looking for the words ...

:( I'm really fairly stupid, so I figured you'd treat me with fairly stupid gloves. I'm slightly hurt. But, as a sweet, simple manchild with a heart of gold, I will pick up the pieces and move on.

Sorry. "Stupid" fell short of a gracious response. I'll stand by the rest of it, though: You painted with a too-broad brush and left me offended.

I can put my finger on it because I am not nearly as gracious and positive as you, Robin! She was trying way too hard to temper criticism with compliment for a restaurant that is a complete waste of time to review when there are about 10 new restaurants cropping up every month in this city. It also reads like each paragraph is a different Yelp review; was everything on the table at once, coursed out? Still waiting on the sparks of imagination she alludes to in the first paragraph, too.

Maybe I am dazzled by the ambience, but I've never had a bad meal at CQ. Does the menu challenge my palate at every turn? No, but it always pleases my palate and I always look forward to going back.

+1

Their buffet is the ONLY buffet I've ever visited that was done well. Thanksgiving buffet is very good. Culinary excitement? Leading the pack in innovation? Maybe not, but I have never been and felt like I was taken advantage of. Great service, full bar and and the best ambiance make it a solid choice for an enjoyable night out.

I still dream of that T-day buffet. The two years we were in exile and we had T-Day there instead of at home, were heaven. Not that T-Day at home is anything less than stellar, but to be able to eat that well and not have to clean up afterwards...dude.
