What?! No mention of NuLu or the Flea on Market? I must write a letter with a quill pen, then copy it on my mimeograph machine and hand it out while playing music on my phonograph in protest!

Per Capita, there isn't a place on earth that can beat Asheville N.C.

Can't be beat for what? good surf? best bourbon bars? ski resorts? la poutine? broadway shows? getting laid? raising young kids?

Its all relative and it all depends on what you're looking for. As for hipster, I don't even know what that means. But I would guess Panajachel, Guatemala may be on my list of what a place like Ashville may offer.

Your typical Louisville hipster is wearing some skinny jeans, a shirt he got from a thrift shop and a fedora. He only listens to obscure indie rock you've never heard of and is only too happy to educate you on it.

You'll find him sitting in front of Heine Brothers reading a Chuck Palahniuk novel, waiting to be noticed by an overly hippy girl. And more often than not, he will be. Ugh.

Actually Jim, When it comes to this whole farm-to-table-locovore-dining-food-truck-drink-local-beer-support-the-local-art-and-music-scene thing....Asheville IS what Louisville WANTS to be...and while I enjoy living here and cherish the friends I have made, were it not for the fact that all the "half backs" who have settled in western North Carolina have driven the cost of real estate to ridiculous levels, I would be there...and not here. (Half-backs defined as people who bail out of the Atlantic seaboard and move to Florida...only to find out it's too fricking hot...so they move "half-way-back" to New Jersey and thus land in North Carolina).

...and as long as we're talking, I just returned from a 9 day trip to Asheville last month where I visited 15 of the 30-plus breweries located withing 40 miles of the city (MOST of them being downtown and within "walking distance") and sampled (by hazy recollection) over 115 different -local- beers....Try that here.

The place IS chock full of hipsters though :?

I guess you put me in my place--9 days drinking as much locally brewed beer as possible and hanging around guys wearing tight jeans, second hand shirts, and who drink coffee (or maybe even beer) in front of coffee shops. Yes, it was well stated earlier--Where else on earth can you beat that?

Has there ever been a more pointless argument?

Until hipsters are a protected class, what does it matter?

  ....Actually in Asheville the hipster uniform de rigueur is knee length hiking/cargo shorts, black socks, low cut hiking boots and a button up plaid shirt with pockets that is half a size too small...completing the ensemble is the usual "half sleeve" tattoo and prerequisite body piercings. All that aside, they DO brew some great beer and cook some good food in that town.

Steve,
I've heard good things about Ashville and I'm sure its a place I'd enjoy for a few days. Besides, you seem to be a good natured guy who enjoys a discussion rather than an argument--I appreciate that in a person. Its just that when one speaks in superlatives of something being the unbeatable place on earth for something they are basically setting themselves up for a jab. That said, I'll venture to state that "there isn't a foodie forum in Louisville that can beat hotbytes!"

I am flabbergasted we made the list and after reading this thread I know I need to travel more. Next stop, Asheville.

I was surprised by our inclusion as well as Baltimore and Savannah as much as why other places like Madison, WS, Burlington, Vt, and Portland, ME didn't make the cut.......

We didn't get the hipster vib in Portland, but Asheville is teeming with hipsters and just plain old hippies.
