Louis's "The Ton," A Butchertown Public House

by Jeff Cavanaugh » Fri Oct 18, 2013 8:42 am

Anyone know what this is about? Corner of Frankfort and Story Ave in Butchertown, in what used to be Johnson's Tavern.

Is that the old bar/liquor store/bait shop next to Sergio's?

Thought that was an interesting change as well. What doesn't appear to have changed is the clientele...

Is it open? I drove up the frankfort ave side of it yesterday and thought it was being worked on....work trucks and what looked like demo debris stacked outside...but I didn't drive past the front side

Just a guess, maybe it's going to be a "Cafe" cycle or Rocker themed bar. The "Ton" was commonly referred to hitting 100 MPH on a old Norton, BSA or Triumph motorbike in Britain during the 60's. With all the hipsters scooting around on 70's era mopeds, Vespas and CB 150s, it seems like a good idea. 8)

Just spoke with the owner about 5 minutes ago and he builds antique bikes for racing at Bonneville so this is a good guess.

I should clarify that I don't actually know what the concept is other than no more $1 beers or bait for sale. That's as far as the discussion got before we started talking about motorcycles.

No more $1 beers? That's just bad business.

Motorcycle club/beer joint and bait shop? I think that's a cool idea. That place has been screaming for a makeover since the Sugar Doe was next door. Best of luck!

WDRB-41 reporter Chris Otts has an update on this:

A bar and outdoor beer garden called Louis's "the Ton" is in the works at the corner of Frankfort and Story avenues in Butchertown.

The historic building at 1601 Story Ave. was home to Johnson's beer and bait shop for decades, said Emmanuel Dumigron, the building's new owner.

Dumigron bought the building with his wife, Helen, for $165,000 in September from Charles and Lydia Johnson, according to Jefferson County property records.

The Dumigrons, doing business as Fountain Wolf Properties, plan to spend $100,000 renovating the building, according to a Louisville Metro permit obtained Dec. 5. They obtained a beer license on Dec. 3, state records show.

The bar will open on Valentine's Day, Feb. 14, Emmanuel Dumigron said.

Based on a recent discussion on the wonders of Asheville, this Frenchman and his wife must be "fous" to have left that scene to come here! Whatever the case I like his approach. Perhaps he'll do a Bridgett Bardo movie marathon night.

That's my only real concern, honestly. While I like the idea of the burlesque/vintage cartoon wall, it is inconsistent with the goal of being a modern local pub. I can think of no local pubs in the 1920's that featured early mid-19th century woodcuts in deference to modern entertainments of the day. Local pubs let the locals dictate the flavor of the entertainment, rarely will they be dictated to. It's worth a shot I guess.

Unless, they are trying to be that vintage pub, then spot on. Maybe I misread. Come in to Louis's The Ton and take a step back to 1917! In which case the beer selection will be vastly different...
