I saw that article, it's certainly heartbreaking, especially considering the fact is inside job is ridiculous. Unfortunately because the product is in high demand with limited quantities things like this are bound to happen. Hopefully whoever pulled off this thievery will be caught and punished!

Shouldn't an amber alert have been issued for this?

When I first heard this story, a few names from this board popped into mind. Either wondering where they were the night in question, or wondering if they were weeping and gnashing teeth.

It was an inside job. The bourbon was stolen over a number of months.

They bottle pappy months before it is released each fall. It is cased in 3 packs which could easily be concealed in a large purse/backpack. Chances are an employee periodically swiped a case. It just came to light as they were preparing shipments for the fall release.

Now that this story is plastered all over CNN, MSNBC, CBS, etc, etc...I'm not so sure the "inside" part of this job wasn't pulled off by the marketing department at Buffalo Trace. Millions of dollars in paid advertising couldn't have bought them this much good press...and all for the cost of a couple hundred bottles of Bourbon. Think about it....

About $27,000 in over priced bourbon or so they are claiming. Report the theft to your insurance company to cover the loss of bourbon and you end up making money in the end.

Come on folks- I know the Marketing people at Buffalo Trace and they are highly ethical. I understand the point, but that's pretty farfetched. And pretty insulting to suggest a company would very publicly accuse their employees of stealing to get PR out of it.... :(
Besides, the Pappy folks don't need any more publicity.

I was just joking. Except for the part about it being overpriced.

I'm happy to celebrate everyone's right to eat and drink (and pay for) what they like, but I've gotta say, the Pappy trophy hunters make me feel a lot better about dropping $50 or so every now and then for our house bottle of Talisker 10. 8)

Regardless of whether one believes my unlikely conspiracy theory...and regardless of whether "Pappy" needs the exposure or not, the bottom line is that there are some marketing people slapping high fives and generally spanking the ol' monkey over this recent event...I mean hell, I'd give up 27K of (insured ?) Bourbon in exchange for millions in free advertising ANY day.

not so sure about that, really...
back when I returned to Louisville in '98 - and Pappy wasn't known to anyone outside of a 100 mile radius of L'ville - you could get a 15 for about $65, a 20 for about $120 or a bottle of 23 for a little over $200.
*IF* you could find any of those locally now, they still run about those same prices.
You could say that those are high prices, I'm only mentioning that I don't think the VanWinkles have significantly raised *their* prices over the years. I think it's the customers (re: eBay) who've jacked up the re-sale market so badly.
