Craving Jewish deli corned beef!

by Joan J » Tue Mar 26, 2013 6:38 pm

Where oh where can I find some in Louisville? Extra credit for pastrami. Shapiro's in Indy is lovely, but too far except for special occasions.

I had a Rueben sandwich at Shenanigan's that was pretty darn good. Obviously cooked in house corned beef. Not quite Shapiero's, but nothing here really comes close.

Stevens and Stevens. Get the Mark's Special - Corned Beef AND Pastrami on fresh rye with brown mustard. You wont be disappointed.

I agree with Pete. Although Stevens & Stevens isn't a classic Jewish-style deli, it's a modern interpretation of an old-school Louisville German deli, and that's pretty close. I don't think you'll have any complaints about their corned beef.

Morris Deli (2228 Taylorsville Road, 458-1668) does a pretty good deli job, too.

Main street coffee and deli has an incredible corned beef sandwich that I often find myself craving. It may be better than their Cuban sandwich.

Castle Wood Reserve corned beef is delicious- very lean and perfectly spiced! I know that at least Sam's Club carries it.

To respectively disagree, after you guys and gals try Stevens and Stevens and all the other excellent above named places, please come by and try our grilled melt in your mouth Reuben. I wouldn't lie about something so delicious, that after eight years, not a day goes by without someone saying directly to us, and anyone that can hear standing in line, that the Shady Lane has "the best damn Reuben they have ever had." Just Saying. Come by and listen, it won't take long to hear the loud and satisfied pronouncements.

P.S.
We are 1.5 miles from the old Sears Building, the gateway to that strange and magical eastern land where even the Dali Lama is coming to visit this summer, right down the street from us. And those Tibetans sure love meat. Peace and Prosperity to all my wonderful restaurant neighbors.

Regards,
William (Reuben) Smith

Stevens and Stevens has corned beef brisket which is quite acceptable, they also have the closest thing to real rye bread that this town has had since Linkers closed.

I haven't been to Shady Lane for a Reuben, but I'll have to give it a try.

Also, for those of you who wouldn't know, a Reuben would not be served in a traditional Jewish deli. Mixing meat and cheese is not allowed. That said, it's a wonderful invention.

Good point! Moreover, it's not originally a New York feast, it's a traditional sandwich from Omaha's meat-packing section, which isn't really known for kashruth.

Shady Lane's Rueben is fabulous! Also, Blue Dog makes a very good pastrami "Rueben.

We have had mixed results at Stevens & Stevens - some good, some meh.

While I would call Louisville a vast wasteland with some decent sandwiches (including Shady Lane) nothing even even comes close to resembling a "true" New York/Chicago/Cleveland/LA Jewish deli.

The closest we've found is actually Jasons, a chain out of (I think) Texas with five locations in town.

What are the hallmarks or key elements of a "true" Jewish deli?
