(Buffalo) Wing Playoffs

by Steve P » Mon Mar 25, 2013 10:50 pm

Given the interest in Basketball around here  , not to mention the brouhaha that surrounds "Derby" THIS would be a really cool food competition...A Buffalo Wing "Bracket". :D I suggest ya lets the "People" narrow it down to a "Sweet 16" and then stack the finalists up for judging in front of a "Panel of Experts"....which of course would include -me- 8)

http://www.cleveland.com/foodplayoffs/i ... ck_th.html

Now, it gets interesting.

Venerable institutions -- Hot Sauce Williams on the East Side and Around the Corner on the West Side -- have been knocked out of the competition in the first Plain Dealer and Cleveland.com Wings Playoffs.

The Greenhouse Tavern, a trendy Fourth Street eatery and feisty challenger, was edged out of contention by 11 votes, losing to Brennan's Colony.

In the East Zone, the Bedford Winking Lizard trumped national chain Quaker Steak & Lube, winning by more than 100 votes. But in the West zone, the Avon Winking Lizard lost by more than 100 votes to national chain Cleats Club Seat Grille.

The battle continues. Round 3 will determine the Final Four restaurants and bars that will move on to the taste-test round.

Between now and noon Wednesday, March 27, your votes will take us one step closer to finding one wing to rule them all.

We started with scores of wings joints (you can check the complete list), and winnowed them to an impressive 32. These restaurants and bars will receive decals identifying them as Lords of the Wings.

The four winners of Round 3 will be evaluated by a panel featuring judges chosen in a contest of local, self-proclaimed wings aficionados.

We'll ask each restaurant and bar to provide samples. The judges will taste each -- with the identities of the establishments masked -- and vote their way to an ultimate winner. We'll announce the champion in the Friday! magazine next week, April 5.

But first, it's your call. You can vote once per day, on each ballot.

I nominate the wings at Smokey Bones to kick things off. Yep it's a chain and yes they are very good!

My nomination goes to Rumors in Middletown. I like the big wing pieces and that they are fried then slathered in sauce.

Just to be clear, are hot wings the same as buffalo wings or is there a certain culinary framework that the recipe should fall in? There's some great wing things out there but I don't know if you could call them buffalo wings. (I'm thinking Asian restaurants.)

Thanks to places like Quaker Steak and Lube and the venerable "BW3" the definition of what constitutes a "Buffalo Wing" took a left turn many years ago...That being said, I don't think you could categorize the product that comes out of your typical Asian restaurant as what is typically thought of when one thinks of a "Buffalo Wing".

Best wings of any kind

Jerk - Cumberland Brewing
Buffalo - BBC
Buffalo - Spring St Tavern
Honey Chipotle - F.A.B.D.
Smoked Root Beer - St Charles Exchange
Asian Turkey Wings - Garage Bar

Let's just give it to Rootie's and declare the competition over!

(although to agree with Ed, my standard meal at Rumors is a dozen oysters and an order of wings)

BTW, the Cleveland article mentioned two Winking Lizards, one beating and one losing to two "chains." Sort of strange, as Winking Lizard is also a chain!

As a member of the selection committee, I'm going to nominate Rootie's on Westport Rd. Marty didn't invent the Buffalo Wing but his original restaurant in Buffalo (NY) was among the first serving up these delectable little morsels...Not to mention these are my favorite wings in town. So throw Rootie's into the mix.

I'm also going to nominate "Joe's Older Than Dirt" as cooking a wing worthy of consideration for the Sweet 16...

Ehhhhh....I've been eating wings at "The Winking" for 20+ years and given they don't have a restaurant outside of Ohio I prefer to think of them a local restaurant with multiple outlets :D As a side-bar, the boys and I get there every month or so for "wing night"...The record for the table is 120 wings with my buddy Matt holding down the record with 30. :P

BTW...I agree that Rootie's is definitely the number one seed in this battle.

They may not qualify if you're sticking to strict Buffalo guidelines (hey, I lived 70 miles from the Anchor Bar, so I know what you mean!)... but I love the smoked wings at Momma's BBQ in St Matthews.

Glad to see this discussion! I've been looking for traditional "Buffalo" wings here in Louisville. There are other styles of wings that we enjoy (one of our favorites are the honey wings at Mark's) but sometimes I just "need" Buffalo style!

IMHO, BW3 wings (of any flavor) are an abomination.

Saints in St. Matthews has shockingly good wings. Big and meaty like Rooties, spicy and not too greasy.

Jim, The wings at Rootie's are as "traditional" as it gets...About the only nod outside the traditional box are the wings sauced with Rootie's own BBQ sauce (available at ValuMart).

Any other notables before we set the bracket ? Gotta be a couple of lower seeded "Cinderellas" out there. Name 'em.

Bluegrass Brewing Co. does a decent model in its Wort Hog Wings.
