Best Burgoo in Louisville?

by Paul T Carney » Wed Mar 13, 2013 1:13 am

Ladies and gentlemen, a simple question to put to you: who has the best burgoo in town?
I have a friend visiting in a few weeks for both our birthdays, and that was his only request, to have burgoo and only the best.
Opinions?

I'm hard pressed to think of anywhere that has that item on it's menu regularly that's local :( Maybe one of the local BBQ places but I don't remember seeing it anywhere. You may have to drive to Owensboro. Or I would bet, that if you called and asked Chef Ryan at Feast in New Albany to make a batch, he would be more than happy to oblige. They have some of the best BBQ around and I'd wager that he would make a fine batch of Burgoo.

F.A.B.D. always has it on the menu. I can't speak for how good it is.

OK, I was spoiled as a child by Hickory House's Burgoo when it was at the corner of T'ville and B'town Roads....nobody that I've tried since holds a candle except Moonlight in O'boro. Just saying!

Well, I will say you may have to travel all the way to Fairdale, but for my money the best Burgoo is at Shack In The Back.

Thanks for the information and recommendations . . . I've been trying to convince him to give our contemporary cuisine a good try, or at least settle for a fine hot brown, but he has it in his head that he wants burgoo, and I just don't have much experience with it (not from around here, to be honest . . . I'm a south Louisiana boy)

Keenland. Can't remember when it opens exactly, but towards the begining of April. If he wants a taste of Kentucky that's the place to get it. Is it the best Burgoo? Who the hell knows? (I'm not sure Burgoo is all that great on its' best day) ...but it's good enough once you've put down a couple of bourbons and won a few races.

I Googled "Burgoo & Louisville" and it appears that Mark's Feed Store also has it on the menu.

That is a fantastic idea! Show your out of town guest a fine Kentucky tradition and have some burgoo at the same time! Dress nice! You wont feel out of place!

My father, Jim Wilson, was a butcher who grew up in the Estill County and was accomplished at his trade. Towards the end of his career he worked for the state inspecting the restaurants at state parks. He was one of the few people around who had expertise in working with the 'varmints' needed in true burgoo - and he was an excellent chef. He made burgoo for state dinners, and in the 70s, made it for the spring meet at Keenland. Unfortunately, I did not live in Kentucky then and never tasted his burgoo, but I hear it was superb.

If your father was responsible for the burgoo at Keeneland in the '70's, I can attest that it was the best burgoo that I have eaten, and nothing that I have had since begins to compare. I must have had 30 bowls a meet for several years.

Hickory Pit BBQ on Shepardsville Rd has good Burgoo according to my husband. They are out of Owensboro and make great BBQ. I do know the Burgoo is only available during the cold weather months and sometimes they run out so may want to call ahead.

Obviously never had it, but I just found this tidbit :

The “spring equinox” menu at Harvest, 624 E. Market St., is under way, featuring burgoo, a Hot Brown burger, buttermilk fried chicken livers, smoked pepper bacon with cornmeal Johnny cakes and a BBQ plate.

Can't imagine it isn't tasty.

Given that Burgoo is loosely defined, I'll limit my comments to whether or not Moonlite style Burgoo is available in Louisville; in my experience, it isn't.

Ole Hickory Pit on Shepherdsville road has it's BBQ roots in Owensboro, but it's Burgoo is seasonal and is a basic "everything in the kitchen" beef soup. Not a bad bowl, but needs to cook down for another day.

Bootleg BBQ offers Burgoo on Preston, but it is a black soup, really not sure where they were going with the seasoning, maybe Worcestershire?

Mark's Feed Store's Burgoo was a simple beef stew with large chunks of potato and carrot. I enjoyed it with a dash oh their mustard sauce, but again, not cooked down.

I finally gave up and concocted a recipe that I crockpot overnite.
