Where to get good licorice?

by Mike Hardin » Tue Sep 11, 2012 9:33 am

I was in Amsterdam last summer and got to sample wonderful candies at http://www.snoepwinkeltje.com/index.php?t_id=2. They must have had 25 different kinds of licorice. Is there any place here to get anything resembling that?

Mike,

Sorry no recommendations on licorice ( don't like the stuff), but I will be in Amsterdam next month for a weekend. And recommendations on where to go and where/what to eat ( besides licorice  )?

Thanks,
Deb

I don't even know if they're still open, but I once got some good salt licorice at the Dundee Candy Shop on Douglass Loop.

the licorice shop by the Farmer's Market, Lincoln Nebraska. A whole store full of licorice any which way you like. Maybe they have a website, not sure what they are called though. I hate the stuff personally lol

You definitely need to try Upstairs.

Upstairs Pannenkoekenhuis
Grimburgwal 2
1012 GA Amsterdam

Billed as the smallest restaurant in Europe and it was fantastic. Hard to find because it is really small but well worth the climb. And other than that, Moeders (Mothers) is really good, down-home cooking. Take a picture of your mother with you and if there's any room left (there was still a blank bit last July) you can pin it on their wall. And if you like candy at all, the place I mentioned has many things besides licorice. Other than those things, just start walking. The Jordaan is a pretty awesome neighborhood so maybe start there. I'm not very well traveled but Amsterdam has to be one of the most beautiful places I've ever been.

Fresh Market, on Shelbyville Road (near Moser Road), sometimes has a variety of licorices in their candy bins. Good luck. Nothing quite like Northern European licorice. Big in Denmark too.

I wasn't aware that ANY licorice was good. Especially that vile black kind.

I hear that a lot. I think it may be as polarizing as cilantro or pizza styles.

In my family, licorice was so loathed that we considered licorice the traditional Santa's punishment for being a bad kid. My wife's family, on the other hand, considered licorice a Christmas present, a happy treat to find in your stocking.

After years in this mixed marriage, I can tolerate it licorice now, even if I won't choose it. But fennel is great stuff, and Chinese five spice is a mandatory ingredient in some Asian dishes ...

I like it black and salty. That being said, you really can't find great licorice here in Louisville. Fresh Market has a few mild varieties, World Market has the mildest of the salty black licorice, but I usually order a couple time a year from the Licorice International ladies listed earlier in the thread. I love the salty dutch licorice they sell... :)

I quite agree with you Dan, I hate licorice, fennel, anniseed, five spice, pernod and ouzo. I don't even really like fresh Basil because of the slight aniseedy taste. Absinthe is a non-starter, but that is probably a good thing. :D

I love licorice, anise, ouzo, but loathe cilantro! I'm going to have to find TJs Scottie dogs. (I also like fruit cake..)
