Ate at Mellow Mushroom

by Andrew Mellman » Tue Aug 28, 2012 11:21 pm

The Mellow in Middletown (directly across Blankenbaker from SE Christian) opened yesterday, and we decided to try it for lunch. This will be a quick, more superficial review, as it had been open fewer than 24 hours, and really any review is unfair (but yes, I'm shouldering on).

We got there at 1:15, and - with a 40% full restaurant - there were around twice as many service staff as customers! Given that, some confusion in seating was to be expected, but after a minute or two we were led to the booth we had seen vacant and had requested.

We ordered hot pretzels (garlic butter with red dipping sauce) and Hummus (what can I tell you - we weren't in a pizza kind of mood, also unfair to the restaurant). Although appetizers, they took a LONG time to arrive; be forwarned that the pretzels are made from scratch. The pretzels were worth every minute of wait, arriving so hot we couldn't eat them right away. The butter and mild garlic flavors were there, and it was outstanding (tho possibly too much bread if one were also ordering pizzas). The Hummus itself was solid (little oil), and seemed skimpy when compared to the quantity of fresh pita bread that accompanied it.

We also got two "half order" sub sandwiches, a mushroom/cheese/artichoke on French bread and a mushroom/meats/bacon/cheese on wheat. Both breads were very nice (although it appeared that they are not made on site), and the sandwiches seemed more like what I'd call a full-size than half size. The mush/cheese/artichoke was a tad skimpy in ingredients, while my sandwich seemed overstuffed. Both were tasty! They came with a bag of chips, which appeared at first glance to be small-batch botique potato chips, but upon examination came with a notice that for questions visit the fritolay.com web site for information!

The waiter gave me my sub with the words "and here's the Italian," and left the table. I had to call him back, as that was not what I had ordered. We could see the kitchen from our table, and could see him go through all receipts to find our table's order, and the cook, the waiter, and several other team members were gathered around my sandwich examining it. Eventually he came back, and stated that in fact this was what I had ordered, but he had never seen this sandwicfh before, and thought it was something else. Oh, well - if you don't want this, don't go the first day!

They had 32 beers on the draft menu, 13 of which were "local" (including faminilar names from Bloomington, New Albany, Louisville, and Lexintgton).

All in all, we would go back, but would save our visit for a time when we wanted to try the pizza. Note that as things settle down the overall experience may prove very different (could be better or worse, don't know), but as a newly opened place it went pretty well.

From New Albany, I believe the choices are Elector and Hoptimus.

We managed to drop in for a late dinner on Monday. We had about a ten minute wait, not bad at all. You could tell the staff was shell shocked from the earlier crowds. We ordered a house special pizza (name ?), cheese bread & a salad. Waitress tells us all pizza take about 40 minutes. Sounds good , we had starters coming that will be no problem. Well, pizza took 35 minutes starters took 50 minutes. Everyone was very apologetic, owners stopped by to say high and sorry. Pizza was tasty. The pies are going for the subtle taste angle light sauce, lighter cheese, etc. The pie was tasty, with a good crust medium weight & a little crispy on the edges. It's not the big flavors of some of the locals, but it has its niche covered pretty well. We will be back after the crowds die back.

Warning don't try to get there on a Saturday evening or Sunday lunch. It is directly across from SE Christian. Traffic is already horrible during those periods, and I know large groups of after service lingerers will fill the place for the foreseeable future.

They could probably tamp that down a bit if they put a Rainbow flag out front.

Now I'm worried. Will the taps turn over fast enough?

But in all seriousness, is SE Christian a teetotaling body, or a rational one? As a gleeful pagan, I honestly don't know.

From their TV commercials, I get the impression they're a fairly "modern" church.

I kinda-sorta wondered a little bit how that was going to work out...With 30-some taps on the wall I'm thinking the linger-over-that-4th-cup-of-coffee "fellowship" crowd is not the target demographic here.

Everyone I know that goes to Southeast drinks beer. Of course I tend to only know people that drink beer so my sample is biased.

I look forward to the one opening in St. Matts, and am tickled they are leaving up the old doughnut shop sign. I ate there once in Lexington and thoroughly enjoyed it, had no idea it was a chain.

As far as SE Christian...what little I know of them comes from a woman on the internet trying to minister to me about abortion on a site where I was looking for gynecological cancer support. Did not leave a good taste in my mouth. (Incidentally, I worked as a server at a Hooters-type restaurant during college, and a fundamentalist Christian asked for a beer in a red Coca-Cola cup, in case anyone from church saw him. No kidding!)

I was out running errands today and found myself in the neighborhood, so I popped in for lunch and a cold beer.

The main dining area and the bar are somewhat separate, I'm thinking a "Religious" side and a "drinking" side  The place is nice looking...but somehow misses out on the comfortable ambiance of the other three locations I've tried (Boone, Asheville and Chattanooga) There are a couple of huge "Louisville" murals (Churchill, Derby, Thunder, etc) which are kinda cool...then there are a these two awkward looking mirrored hangy things over the bar...They are -supposed- to be upside down renditions of the spires at Churchill but they come off looking like 5 foot tall disco balls.

Service was good...not great...no major complaints. The owner stopped by to say "hi" (She and her husband...both Louisville natives...co own the restaurant).

The pizza was really good...I liked it better than (say) Boombozz but I don't know that anyone (myself included) will ever call it the "Best Pizza in L'ville". I'm more of a Coals/DiOrios kinda guy but like an earlier poster said, this pie fills a niche.

The wings (I had a small order = 5) were -very- tasty but among the scrawniest wings I've had anywhere...probably a supplier issue, I'd try 'em again.

The beer selection is -awesome- probably one of the best...if not -the- best in Louisville. They had 4 or 5 of my "go to" beers on tap and there were another 6 or 8 that caught my eye as something to try in the future. If you can't find a beer you like in this place, your cause is hopeless.

It was pretty packed at lunch, about half full when I arrived and totally full when I left. It was definitely a pretty buttoned down crowd...and there were at least two, maybe three -big- tables (10+ toppers). Not sure if this was a business lunch bunch or some kind of spillover from an event at the Taj Ma Jesus or not (there -were- several dozen cars in their parking lot across the street - but that might have been car poolers, who knows).

All in all a pretty good place...If I lived conveniently to this location (as I'm sure a lot of you do) I'd be there a -lot-...That being said I don't see myself driving down all the way from Garage Logic on too regular of a basis...

I stopped by the St Matthews location today to talk Schlafly with them and was AMAZED by what they have done with the space. There are a number of MMs in my territory and they all tend to walk the same line aesthetically. This location, however, doesn't feel like any other MM that I have been in. It's very eclectic, with lots of seemingly reclaimed elements, such as the wall of vintage TV sets that serves as the backdrop to the host stand. They obviously took great care to make this a unique space. Add to that their decision to keep the old Baker Boy Doughnut sign on the front and you have a very cool spot. Oh, and they have 40 taps of craft beer. So, they have that going for them...which is nice. Friends and family is this weekend, and they open next Monday.

I'm looking forward to trying the St. Matts location...from what you (and others I know who have seen the space) have said they have spared no quarter giving the place a unique personality. Combine that with the location and it's a virtual certainty it's going to be the next big thing.

The Middletown location ?.....Ehhhhhhhhh....Now that I've had the time to ponder, I'm really not impressed with the esthetics of the place. Cool looking Louisville murals aside, the place has a distinct Red Robin-in a strip mall-ish feel to it. Don't get me wrong, the Middletown location will probably be a huge success...What the hell, the after church crowd alone guarantees that...but right out of the gate, I don't ever see it having the "vibe" of the St. Matts location. It's hard to speak in universal terms but the way I see it playing out, St. Matts is going to be the place where the party crowd hangs out to eat and drink...and drink. ($$$). Middletown is going to be the place where mom and dad take the kids for a quick meal...and maybe dad quaffs a beer along the way ($). The other thing that bugs me about the Middletown location is the parking lot...it's a tight quartered maze...I almost got whacked by two mini vans and an SUV yesterday and that was just a lunch crowd.

I stopped by the Blankenbaker location yesterday afternoon for a quick look. I only had time to grab a beer, so I didn't really sample the food. I have to agree with Steve that the decor is a little more sterile than other MM's I've been to. Sounds like the St. Matt's location should be more interesting. The place was clean though and should work fine for a pizza place, just a little generic.

Anyway, I have to really echo the fact that their beer selection is FANTASTIC! The 30 plus taps are overwhelming good beers with lots of craft offerings. Even the larger brewer offerings have taste or at least fill a niche. In fact, they don't have any of the Mega beers (Bud, bud lite, Miller, etc) offered on draft. They are only available in bottles or cans. It will be interesting to see if that lasts. The bartender was pretty psyched about their offerings and was helpful and friendly. I look forward to going back and enjoying some food and the beer. I only had time for a Widmer rotating tap O'Ryely IPA, which was very tasty, before I had to go. The bartender nicely pointed out that the ownership of the Blankenbaker and St. Matt's location are different, so that the beer program may be different as well. He did not know what they will have at the St. Matt's location, but he was fairly sure that they would have a good beer offering as well.

Regards,

Doug
