Food Trucks...Too much of a good thing?

by Dan Thomas » Tue Aug 14, 2012 7:50 am

Could the same thing possibly happen here? I suspect so, if it isn't already happening quietly.

Interesting read on the subject

Yeah, maybe. I doubt things are to that point yet, though. We have what, 15 trucks that are at least somewhat regular fixtures around the city? I doubt that's market saturation yet. There might be some categories of food that wouldn't bear more trucks - Grind and Black Rock Grille have the burger scene covered and Holy Mole and Traveling Kitchen are all over the gourmet-taco space. I think it'll require increasing creativity and dedication to quality to put new trucks on the road and make them profitable, but I think Louisville still has at least some room to grow.

I am still patiently waiting, hands folded quietly on my lap, for an Indian Food Truck. Naan bread and curry please...

Recently I've also seen several "2nd class" for lack of a better word, food operations and I really wonder if they have operating permits for metro governments or not. What I've seen several times is a very beat up turquoise and white trailer pushing Mexican Food. It's so small I don't see how it could have room for everything that metro requires. I wonder if these type of operations are springing up because of the popularity of the others?

Permitted (health dept) and Licensed (metro) food trucks are required to post both their Permit and their License in a window. Look for both documents.

And, yes its getting a little saturated in Louisvilke, if you count all the trucks in the varying states of Permitting and Licensing.

We had a large event last Saturday, and Leah, with the Louisville Food Truck Association, arranged for us to have fabulous food trucks. Thank you Red's, Black Rock Grille, and Louisville Dessert Truck! Not only was the food top notch, but the trucks and operators were permitted and licensed, and were able to provide insurance certificates to the venue.

I want great food, but I also want to deal with people who take their craft seriously, and good business practices are part of it. Hopefully, that will enable Louisville to avoid takeover by mediocre chain trucks. A chain's ONLY advantage is that people are familiar with the brand and (rightfully or not) therefore, not scared of food poisoning.

BTW, Black Rock Grille made a breakfast egg, bacon, and cheese sandwich, which was amazing.

I'm with Mary Anne - Until we have a Hurry Curry truck, we're not done. Indian street food can be made in the morning and served up easily and fast. Most curries sit well all day. I'd love to see channa and poori, samosa, pakora, stuffed paratha, raita, saag paneer. My wife, Carolyn, suggest having a paper cone with naan or chapati rolled around inside and the curries ladled in. Street food in India is one of my cherished food memories.

Is there a good BBQ truck? I've definitely kicked that idea around a few times.

Do these have regular spots, schedules, routes? Bar B Lou is the only one I've seen, at the Monday and Tuesday events downtown.

Oliver is parked in Hikes Point at the moment.
Cowboy works Indiana and posts his locations on Fb.
Country Boy in waaaay out Taylorsville Rd. in the Fisherville area.
MoeLicious rotates between Jtown and Shelbyville Rd. Also posts on Fb.

I forgot the Pink Baron. Also works Indiana.

Bar.B.Lou works a lot of private parties and events and he'll almost always be part of both Main Street Monday and Food Truck Tuesday.

If you're looking for them on Facebook they are listed as: "Moe-Licious BBQ" their location on Shelbyville road is across from Trinity.
