Good beer + good food.......

by Becky M » Thu Jul 19, 2012 7:05 pm

I'm not a drinker anymore (not that there's anything wrong with that    ) but a mommy friend of mine is having a date night and is looking for a place with good beers to try and good food as well.

She's looking for something in either the east end or downtown.

I know I can always count on good suggestions here ......

You might get more than you bargained for on this topic...

Cafe Lou Lou

They have a Douglass Loop and St. Matthew's location.

As an aside, I'm not sure what qualifies as "East End" anymore.

Against the Grain is okay if they're looking for a brewery type place, fairly good food, nice beer, and a reasonable price. That's on Main Street. Now if you're looking for someplace that has good food and simply has domestic beer selections with a few international brands to choose from; I can suggest Bristol(Highlands) which has very good bar/pub food, or our very own Chef Deano's 'Jack's Lounge' (Frankfort Ave.) which has a great atmosphere and even better food.

Off the top of my head: Harvest and Doc Crows downtown, and I'd second Mark's advocacy of Holy Grale. Cafe Lou Lou's a fine call, too.

Coal's had a decent beer list last time I was there.

Their online menu doesnt list their tap list though, so who knows?

Really, is that so hard? Even Holy Grale with their ever changing taps gives a representative sample of their tap list that updates once per month.

Same, both on the positive and negative side for Village Anchor.

Im afraid to look up any more, it will probably just make me angry.

Edit: An apology in order to the Village Anchor, they do have their beer list on their website. Its just separate from the menu.

http://www.villageanchor.com/list-beer.pdf

I think they meet the East End/Good Food/Good Beer requirements.

Hammerheads also has a decent beer list, since they don't serve any other types of alcoholic beverage. And the food is great!

Louisville geography can be weird, but what are we defining as "East End" and "Downtown" for this purpose? As much as I love Hammerheads and the Grale, I dont think either qualify. :D

Both are very close to downtown, and since they're both east of downtown, they're "East End" enough for me.

North of 64 and East of the switch from Frankfort Ave to Shelbyville Rd. Thats the best I can come up with.

Seems to work for me...St Matts is east, but Clifton isnt. Middletown is east, but Jtown isnt.

Growing up in Okolona, I though of anything inside the Watterson as "downtown". But Ive been corrected enough over the years that Im going to be just as picky back.

Im sure the residents of the Highlands and Germantown dont think of themselves as "downtown" or "east end".

Germantown, no. But back in the day, Highlands and Crescent Hill WERE "the East End." St. Matthews was suburbs, and everything else was farms. Geez, I'm old.

They were still the east end of Louisville until, what, 12 years ago?

Also, Middletown was originally chartered in 1797, so not entirely farms out that way. Okay, still mostly farms.

[As I write that, I realize I have no idea if Crescent Hill was part of Louisville or not, I know the Highlands was]
