Amazing Race Showings?

by Amy A » Sun Nov 04, 2007 2:31 pm

Can anyone think of a place with big screens that would be a good place to organize viewings of the Amazing Race?

Since there is a local couple on it this season, I would think a business might want to do a night for people coming out to eat and drink and root the couple on to victory.

I can't think of any place that's doing this or would do it. I wish they'd pick a couple from Kentucky that Truly Represents Kentucky instead of the two they picked so far. The first one (a coal miner and his wife) from Eastern Kentucky showed the hick side of Kentucky and this couple shows the weird side of Kentucky, maybe next time we'll get a couple that is like the majority of kentuckians! Oh wait, maybe the same advertising agency that was picked to develop the ads promoting Louisville also picks the couple's that participate in "The Amazing Race".

By "Kentuckians" do you mean Anchorage residents?

Since they both work in the restaurant industry, I thought some establishment might want to do something fun for them.

Hopefully someone will jump in with something.

Certainly not, nor do I think residents of Germantown, Shively or Lyndon do, but I don't think either of the two groups that have been represented on Amazing Race from Kentucky represent the majority of Kentuckians, do you? I realize that this program like most reality shows select people from fringe groups in order to create more drama so people watch the show but they also need to represent a demographic of a state that the residents of that state can identify with in a positive manner which I don't feel this show has done!

See, I disagree. Our state is made up of wonderfully unusual and unique people. I think the goth couple and the coal miners are both representative of our state. Instead of judging them for being from a "fringe group" we should be be proud of our state's diversity.

I am an avowed AR junkie- I DVR the reruns shown everyday day at 3am and watch them with my breakfast. I am wondering about your definition of "fringe groups" on the show.

Is it people who don't look like "us"? There was a very attractive suburban couple on the show (upscale, well manicured, drove a BMW). Of course he made his wife carry his bags and called her stupid on every show. They created drama galore. And anyone in Texas could be proud of their appearance.

Or does fringe imply minority groups like the bevy of models and mid-american beauty queens that have appeared? I must admit I do have a difficult time identifing with them. I wonder if people in their states feel misrepresented?

In regards to your worry that the coal mining couple didn't adequately represent the state of KY to it's best I can offer this :
A dear friend in NYC told me that she couldn't stand them- that they made her uncomfortable and judgemental. In a few weeks time she told me that while watching them and listening to their generosity and compassion and openess to new people and experiences she had realized how wrong she had been.

Quite frankly this is the type of person I am proud to be associated with, whether I share their demographic or not, and I certainly identify with them in a positive manner. I think I'll give the goth couple the same courtesy. Perhaps I'll learn something.

To add to that point, I met Kynt in 2005 after returning to Louisville from New Orleans post-Katrina. He was very active in local Katrina relief efforts. The burlesque troupe he operates, Grotesque Burlesque, put on a very entertaining (and free) show at a Mardi Gras celebration held for evacuees.

I didn't know there was a couple from Kentucky on the show - that's so cool! When is it on? What channel?

true. Or, we could get a guy that looks like Daniel Boone and woman straight out of "The Stephen Foster Story" cast.

I dig em'. How could ANY two people represent all of Kentucky? I watch AR and could care less about where the teams are from. I certainly don't think ALL people from a certain city/state must be just like to 2 folks on the race.
