Session Beer Day - April 7th

by Shane Campbell » Tue Apr 03, 2012 11:55 am

April 7th is session beer day! Oddly enough it isn't marked on my calendar but Lew Bryson says it's so.

Is anybody doing anything to tie in with this event? I'm sure you beer mongers all knew about this and are planning something capital right?

I can recommend a spot that will have three including one on cask just for Shane.

I'm not sure this can be quantified, but how big is the difference between a 4.5% beer and, say, the 5.1% beer I am currently drinking (Magic Hat #9)? The difference between "session" beer and "big" beer is clear enough. But, within smaller ranges, can anyone (Roger? Shane? David), explain what a .6 difference in ABV really means?

Just always been curious, and this seemed like an appropriate thread to ask...
Thinks the frosty mug is the low point in American history.

It is a definition of ABV posited by Lew Bryson, the beer writer who is spearheading session consciousness. His parameters:

► under 4.5% alcohol by volume
► flavorful enough to be interesting -- no light beers, please
► balanced enough for multiple pints
► conducive to conversation
► reasonably priced

I'm embracing his ABV standard. I'm also offering Kentucky Kolsch ... well, Light; to me, it is a Kolsch in everything but name, and a good Kolsch, while "light", also has a good deal of subtle character.

I guess my question is: Is the 4.5% mostly arbitrary, or does it actually represent some important distinction? Or, said differently, after 3 pints how much more drunk would the same person be if they were drinking a 5.1% beer instead?

18% more? Or is my math fuzzy?

Tongue in cheek, of course, as it's all relative. Are you asking: if I drink 3 - 4.5% beers, and my BAL is .085, what would the BAL be if I drank 3 - 5.1%? If I were playing the lottery, I'd wager .092
