Not getting much discussion on the board but I have to say that Rye is serving some of the most, if not the most, exciting food in the city right now. In many ways they've picked up and moved on - filling in the gap left by Social. I have not had anything I didn't gush over. Frankly the food is improving by the week - last night we had lamb sweatbreads frito misto, potato gnocci, artichoke salad with shaved veggies and pecorino, seared pompano. The menu changes frequently.

An amazing addition to the local scene.

Agreed, I hope Louisville continues to support them.

We've had some good stuff there. Got the giant bass head last weekend. It was the size of a regular dinner plate, so they had to serve it on a platter. Some of the best fish-flesh in Lousiville. If you order it, be sure to dig deep into the head for some good stuff that tastes like bone marrow.

I agree that Rye helps to fill the Social gap. We were thinking the same thing. But I hope that they honor their late-night hours with a smile, as the folks at Social always did when we showed up at 11:30pm on a Tuesday!

Definitely agreed. I have to admit that I was somewhat underwhelmed on my first visit during opening week, but we've been back three times and have had interesting and well prepared meals each time. I really enjoy places that keep their menus fresh with new dishes. It keeps me coming back.

We've been once, fairly close to opening day, and food was very good.

Is the music still at a fairly hefty volume or am I just getting old? It was loud enough that night that it's played a factor in whether we return or not. I did not ask that it be turned down on our visit because it didn't seem to be bothering anyone else. I did ask if I was getting old. right?

Thanks-Doug

Could it be both?

I do get a sense that a LOUD ENVIRONMENT is the new hip thing. This was my one dislike about 732, as it is about Harvest and Garage Bar. It's almost insane at The Silver Dollar, but given its honky-tonk theme it makes sense there. I pretty much suck it up, tell myself "don't be old" and just go, but if I want adult conversation, I make plans elsewhere. Wiltshire is about the only place in Nulu I can think of that's suitable for conversation, and even that can vary depending on how deep people are stacking up at the bar.

Outdoor dining when seasonally appropriate helps quite a bit in this regard.

Agree wholeheartedly, patios at Rye and Decca were neither one open when we first dined there. We'll be back and give them a try.

Unfortunately, outdoor dining has become the de facto smoking area, which absolutely spoils it for me.

I'm hoping maybe sometime the smoking ordinance will be amended to prevent smoking in any area where food is served. Many times eating outside is a very pleasant experience until the smokers ruin it for everyone.

The only place this has been problimatic for me is Seviche - everyone on their patio seemingly smokes while they eat? I think restuanteurs should consider baning smoking where they serve food or segregate that population to one area and not intermingled with the general dining public.

This is our problem in the summer as well: it's freezing inside the restaurants and there is smoking on the patio.

Also, I believe it is true that there are no-smoking signs at the Mayan Cafe's side patio? (It's one of our favorites, by the way!) I think this has been discussed here before--but do we know which places ban smoking on their patios?

Since smokers have notoriously poor palates, maybe we can come to a compromise: let's ban patio-smoking, but only at the good restaurants! :)

Mark,
Our patio has been smoke-free since we reopened from our renovations last summer. I know that it was a problem before and that's why we made the decision. Hopefully you will visit us again this season and enjoy the fresh air!

Madi we still get into Seviche not that infrequently - we had just avoided the outdoor seating. Thanks for making that choice as it will only increase the frequency of our visits. :D

Didn't Bank Street implement a "smoke-free" patio policy too? I thought I remember something about that...

We eat outside whenever possible and will gladly patronize places places that institiute a smoke-free patio policy. That said- I'm starting another thread to get input.
