Stores Confront Extreme Couponers’ Tactics

Stores Confront Extreme Couponers’ Tactics With Policy Changes

"For extreme couponers who pay only a few bucks for an entire shopping cart’s worth of goods, or even earn money on their shopping trips by reimbursing coupons with a higher value than the item’s price, couponing practically functions as a part-time job. Stores are ready to give them the pink slip"...

And this...

"Memo to extreme couponers: Some retailers, particularly supermarkets and drugstore chains, are mad as hell and they're not going to take it anymore. To save their bottom lines, they're setting limits on just how much all your cleverness can save you"...

It wouldn't hurt my feelings if all coupons just went away, never to be seen again.

Can we throw the folks who still write checks into that time slot also?

Most of those people are friggin crazy. What drives a person to think they need 200 bottles of mustard?? I have watched a couple of shows about them and only once did I see somebody putting the couponing to good use. One episode profiled a couple that gave most of their extreme buys to a local food pantry. Other than that Im glad to see retailers fighting back.

I use coupons and am also a member of a couponing forum but even most every post on that forum think the extreme couponers are nuts. I think those people spoil it for those of use that use a few coupons to save a few dollars on our groceries.I have no interest in hoarding. On the rare occasion I have gotten extra items I have shared with family and a couple of times I made a trip down to Wayside Christian Mission.

I have always wondered how much of the extreme couponing is just for "tv".

How many of us would actually buy 200 of something we don't use everyday?

I doubt, though, that any one of these companies would hesitate to exploit loopholes in the tax code to reduce their liability to zero, or better yet, get a refund. I don't see the difference.

The primary difference is that I don't have to stand in the grocery store line behind these companies (acknowledging that corporations -are- people)... :?

But yeah, I get yer point and wholeheartedly agree.

My dear mother is not an extreme couponer or even a hoarder (per se) but she can NOT pass up a good sale. Every time Folgers Coffee is on sale (which is about every other week) she buys one of those big plastic cans of coffee. Bless her heart, I think she kinda-sorta loses track of just how much coffee she has on hand...last month I was cleaning up her basement and she had (roughly) 50 pounds of Folgers on hand.

Speaking of coupons...On the off chance not everyone is already aware of it, you can go online and "load" coupons onto your Kroger Plus Card (and who doesn't have one of those). Then when you get to the checkout it automatically deducts the coupon amount from your tab. Pretty cool.

I was at Kroger a couple weeks ago and ran into 2"binder ladies" in an aisle. I was relieved I finished shopping before them. The cashier said Kroger has new rules stating how many coupons that can be used in one transaction. It always floors me when those people get money back. I don't have the time, patience or storage for that!

I know a lady that teaches classes on how to extreme coupon. It'll only set you back $500 for her course  I better be saving a LOT to pay that! She said something the other day about having 50 tubes of toothpaste and enough deodorant for her whole family of 6 for life. It's a thrill for her to pay nothing for things, kinda like it's a thrill for us to find some crazy ingredient that inspires us in the kitchen. The annoying part is her husband is a VP for a medical insurance company so it's not like she "needs" the coupons and she doesn't donate anything she coupons.

Good for the stores, I can imagine it will only be for the better for the rest of the shoppers.

What a waste. That stuff expires. You can use it for a little while after the expiration date and still get some effectiveness, but you'll never go through that much fast enough, unless you're running a hotel.
