I certainly agree! They still aren't true the New York bagels but they are certainly better than anything else we have in town.

Bruegger's was the best locally when it was here before, although it was a step down from its predecessor, Sid's. I hope it hasn't changed over a decade.

That being said, I've had the bagels from Breadworks brought to some meetings I attended and was surprised that they came closer to authentic texture and flavor that the competition.

Some people like Nancy's, but I actually get angry when I think about them.

Unfortunately Sid's was gone before we moved here. We haven't tried Breadworks but it's fairly close to us so we probably ought to try them. I certainly couldn't agree more about Nancy's! They are the poorest excuse for a bagel I've ever tried and I don't understand how anyone who likes bagels can like them.

Angry??? I know you've said in previous threads that you don't like Nancy's bagels, but what's to get angry about? They have great coffee, and their gazpacho is hard to beat for a quick, cheap lunch. I for one am glad they're in the neighborhood.

The new Brueggers location is on Breckenridge Lane not far from Molly Malone's. They should be open near or on February 1st. At least I know they'll have good coffee. :D

I was sort of fooling around, Mike. I get frustrated for the reasons stated elsewhere in this thread: Their bagels are very disappointing, yet they are often being held up as "authentic NYC bagels." They are so far from this standard that it, um, irritates me. Maybe that's it, substitute "irritable" for "angry."

I haven't been particularly whelmed by their coffee or other food items either, but in fairness, I haven't been in for quite a while. I check on the bagels often, though, as they're sold at Heine Bros.

GAH!!!! OMG- Breugger's Bagel's makes me so mad. I was hired the week they skipped town when I was 16 years old. I worked all week, and on the 5th day, they abruptly came in, told me the place was closing and asked me to stay late (on a school night) and help them get all the food out of the store. Idid. They never freaking paid me. To this day that completely eats me up. Such a terrible thing to do to a kid.

Bagels being not up to snuff can do that. I completely understand. :D
Hoping that Bruegger's will be good! Otherwise, I am going to have to bring bagels back from St. Louis when I visit and stick them in the freezer. There is one place that makes awesome bagels. Not NYC, but they are the real deal.

I believe your gripe should be with the franchisee not Bruegger's itself. If memory serves me correctly the local ones were franchises not corporate stores, not sure what this one is going to be.

So why is it that they closed some 10 years ago when they were just around the corner in the Bazo's/Simply Thai location?

I would imagine this is a different franchisee or maybe a corporate stores instead of the same people who have the last franchise.

I am a bagel and pizza snob from the greatest city on the planet. I attest that despite having had bagels around the country, the Bruegger's model is the closet thing out there. When I lived in Wisconsin, I would drive 45 miles to get one. Needless to say, when I saw the sign, I was excited.
